Our tour guide actually, was amazing, very knowledgeable, and you can tell she loves the place. The walk through the city felt a bit too short in that, it was hard to fully soak in all the history and beauty. We saw the key attractions, yes, and we snapped pictures. In short, I feel I could have easily spent another few hours there, just exploring at a relaxed tempo, sort of drinking in the past. Even though, as a brief introduction, it was quite awesome and truly made me want to return for longer.

Pamukkale: The Cotton Castle

From Ephesus, it was off to Pamukkale, famous for its white travertines – you know, the “Cotton Castle.” So after seeing images of it, I was stoked to visit and, that too, it didn’t disappoint. That means the terraces are beautiful and so unique, with warm, mineral-rich water trickling down. Walking barefoot on the travertines is an awesome sensation. And, like a cool natural foot massage… However, they were very crowded. Seemingly, hordes of tourists and trying to snap the ideal picture. While beautiful, my visit was very brief. Anyway, not as peaceful as I have anticipated, which is why I feel could have easily spent extra time there too, mostly early in the morning or late in the afternoon when it tends to get quieter. Plus, the adjacent ancient city of Hierapolis really, is worth a wander, but the one day tour did not let me stay too long there either.

What’s Included and What’s Not

Alright, so it’s important to know what you are getting yourself into. Generally, this day trip comprises a domestic flight (round trip from Istanbul), guided tours of Ephesus and Pamukkale, entrance fees, and lunches. What is actually cool is not worrying too much on these specifics. But, drinks are usually not included, so bring some money to pay for sodas or water. In a way, individual souvenirs are extra, so keep that in mind while seeing some cool stuff. Typically, tips for the tour guide and driver aren’t part of the deal, that means factoring that in, if you think they have earned it.

Food on the Tour

Lunch that day was included, which actually was handy. More or less, it was your standard Turkish fare. The buffet had lots of options.
