Hervey Bay Whale Watch Cruise: An In-depth Review

Hervey Bay in Queensland, Australia is almost world-famous, really, as a pretty amazing place to glimpse migrating humpback whales. This location gives, like, shelter and calm waters, which is, apparently, exactly what these huge creatures are searching for on their yearly trip. Getting on a half-day whale watch cruise seems like one of those super common “must-do” things if you are in the area, so I figured I might, actually, share my experience and, maybe, offer some helpful tips if you’re considering taking the plunge yourself.

Booking Your Whale Watching Adventure

Whale Watching Booking

There’s a bunch of different tour operators in Hervey Bay, it’s like your choices are endless, and selecting the best one sometimes feels a bit, honestly, like a shot in the dark. I ended up going with “Whale Watch Wonders” based on, you know, reviews I peeped online and a recommendation from a friend, that, too. Make sure you check different packages, because that can affect your total cost.

Consider things like, like, if lunch is included (because being on the water makes you incredibly hungry), what sort of boat they use, and what their “whale sighting guarantee” is. A sighting guarantee usually means that if you do not spot any whales during your trip, that, maybe, you’re going to get either a partial refund or a free trip on another day.

One thing that struck me right away with “Whale Watch Wonders” was that they gave a, like, small group feel to things, apparently they didn’t over-crowd their boat, which created a far nicer experience than what you might have got with the ‘big’ operators. The boat was also, too it’s almost purpose-built with, like, lots of viewing platforms. This really is ideal for seeing the whales when you, like, consider some boats make it hard to see stuff, what with the number of people crammed into them.

The Boat and Crew: A Comfortable Experience

Whale Watching Boat

The vessel itself really was comfortable and fairly spacious, like I said before, it wasn’t cramped whatsoever. It’s almost like they were well-maintained with both inside seating, which is quite covered and has outside viewing spots. Getting onboard it’s kind of great as you’re greeted by a super friendly and helpful crew, that, too.

Throughout the journey, they give commentary on the whales’ behavior and their conservation, the crew really seemed to have passion for these marine mammals. I got to pick up so much about these, mostly gentle, giants that I never had any clue about before.

On the Lookout: The Thrill of the Search

Whale Search

Heading out into the water felt like the, pretty great, start of an adventure, and the anticipation began to rise when we hit open waters. The crew was almost on the lookout, giving a little colour and information about the bay as well as the whales while searching for them.

And then, almost, like a distant spout of water shot out in the distance – that was a big moment for everyone, obviously. “There she blows!” someone shouted, in that typical “Here’s the whale!” sort of voice. From that moment onwards we went straight towards the action. Very soon the whales started getting playful and coming directly alongside the vessel.

Witnessing Humpback Majesty: Breaches and Playful Displays

Humpback Whale Breaches

When you glimpse those big animals, like, breaching and spyhopping so close it feels really overwhelming, it is a real once-in-a-lifetime thing, actually. They gave almost impressive shows of raw power, followed by more tender and serene moments where they simply swam around.

I almost was fortunate enough to witness a, rather spectacular, breach where this huge whale launched almost completely out of the water. Soaking everyone with the water that got splashed when it landed back into the ocean with a mighty crash. This is just one highlight but other whale activity, that is the sort where the animals come right up to the vessel and, then, inspect their human onlookers are almost as exciting as anything else I can possibly put here, really.

They seem very curious about us, as humans. I couldn’t assist myself thinking we’re just as curious of them and all I want is the ability to be around them and hang out with the whales, is that crazy to wish, that, too?

Photography Tips for Whale Watching

Whale Watching Photography

When taking whale-watching photographs, or whale pictures, a decent camera equipped with, kind of, zoom lens makes all the difference. Although smartphone cameras are getting quite awesome these days, very.

For ideal results, up the shutter speed to, maybe, deal with the movement of the boat as well as the whales. Remember, and this is quite important, the spray off their blowholes sometimes looks pretty great when you’re getting up-close-and-personal.

What to Bring: Preparing for Your Cruise

Whale Watching Packing

The sun on the water is kind of intense, that, maybe, you would need sunscreen, hat, as well as sunglasses, definitely. When you are booking, make sure the tour provides enough refreshments and/or if you are able to carry snacks.

Don’t forget to think about any medication if you have, like, seasickness, as a preventative approach to, like, potential discomfort, particularly if the weather takes a nasty turn that morning.

Conservation and Respect: Watching Responsibly

Whale Watching Conservation

When taking your journey, that you need to respect whale welfare is paramount, right, that is crucial! The cruise company usually follows the regulations in place so that, seemingly, disruption to these huge creatures are kept low. Listen carefully, though, for instructions coming from crew-members so that you, basically, don’t cause distress, alright?

Overall Verdict: Is It Worth It?

Without any shadow of a doubt at all, seeing the humpback whales around Hervey Bay really can only be, almost, defined as a totally unforgettable moment! The excitement regarding watching the activity in the water, paired along with what is often an educational component gives something for all sorts of travellers really.
