Hells Gate National Park & Lake Naivasha Boat Ride Review: Is It Actually Worth It?

Planning a trip, or, you know, maybe just dreaming a bit, about heading to Kenya? I get it. The thought of seeing wildlife and gorgeous scenery, well, very nearly takes my breath away, that is if I really stop to think about it. Thing is, though, trying to decide how to spend your time and money, basically, is hard. So, I’m writing to you, well really for you, to break down what it’s actually like to visit Hells Gate National Park combined with a boat ride on Lake Naivasha. My hope, frankly, is to give you a genuine sense of whether it lives up to the hype.

What’s the Big Deal About Hells Gate National Park, Actually?

Hells Gate Gorge

Alright, first off, Hells Gate is more or less different from your everyday safari spot. You know, instead of being stuck in a vehicle all the time, you have this awesome chance to walk, cycle, and even rock climb through this dramatic landscape. And, that landscape, honestly, is something else. We’re talking towering cliffs, gorges with names like “Devil’s Bedroom” and “Inferno Pool,” all created by, well, actually a history of volcanic activity. Pretty amazing, right? The area is a sanctuary too, by the way, for birds and those gentle grazers you often see, really adding to that whole sense of peacefulness. In a way, that feeling stays with you, I would argue.

One thing to know, still, is that Hells Gate had some fame earlier; it, sort of, inspired the setting for “The Lion King.” So, too it’s almost as though walking, maybe strolling, here is stepping straight into a movie. As a matter of fact, I find that that sort of connection very interesting, even special.

Cycling Through the Park: Worth the Effort?

cycling in Hells Gate

Okay, cycling in Hells Gate sounds like a good plan, so, here’s the story. Picture this: you’re on a bicycle, actually, and there’s the African sun on your face, seemingly. In some respects the breeze is in your hair, really, as you slowly go down a path with zebras and giraffes just nearby. Basically, it sounds magical, right? That, arguably, is how I felt at the beginning, very, very early on. However, I feel I should let you know, cycling isn’t always, perhaps never is, as straightforward as it sounds. A bit of the terrain can be a little rough, even very rough, too, you know. It gets pretty hot, basically, and after that the bikes you rent, generally, are not always in great shape, sadly.

That is not to say you shouldn’t do it; it’s just better to know that the reality is, really, a bit tougher than the fantasy, possibly slightly different than expected. Be sure, that is, be very sure, to bring enough water, basically. Consider wearing a hat and don’t forget sunscreen. You’ll probably, nearly, feel more prepared and then enjoy the experience a little bit more, truly.

The Gorge Walk: Is It a Must-Do?

Hells Gate Gorge Walk

After your bike adventure, anyway, is it a very good plan to walk the gorge? Oh, I am saying yes, alright, absolutely yes. That is, that is if you are reasonably mobile and you have a sense of adventure. You might be there when the hike basically is through narrow passages, so it requires a bit of scrambling and sometimes wading through, so, shallow streams, for example.

Now, of course, what makes this really, so very special, is being completely enclosed by rock walls. It is kind of, sort of, as though being in this lost tiny, very tiny, location, where the light does some special trick. Is that right? Plus, you typically need to, maybe usually need to, hire a guide who knows the area and it’s important, so very important, to keep you safe, that. Just, that’s just some sound advice. So, the thing that adds on some extra cost to your visit to the park, typically that is, but trust me, so you’ll actually be happy, like actually very happy, you did. You’ll have the feeling it’s money very well spent, in other words.

Lake Naivasha: More Than Just a Boat Ride, Right?

Lake Naivasha Boat Ride

Okay, time to head to Lake Naivasha, actually. And just so you’re aware, it is a freshwater lake that actually, actually has tons of birdlife and some hippos that you’ll very likely see. A boat ride in Naivasha is probably very much more than ‘just’ a boat ride; I’d argue it is almost like experiencing some truly remarkable peace, like total tranquility.

You’ll also find there is that opportunity to view some diverse and pretty exciting wildlife, you’ll very much see it, that and, arguably, from a totally new angle, apparently. Often, the boats typically will get close enough to Crescent Island. Just an important little note, Crescent Island is a sanctuary, so to say, where animals freely roam. Basically you’ll likely be really up close and maybe even personal with zebras and giraffes.

Up Close with Wildlife: How Close Is Too Close, Anyway?

Lake Naivasha hippos

Viewing hippos on Lake Naivasha, anyway, is typically one of the highlights. Keep a safe distance and, similarly to your other experiences, actually listen carefully to your guide. That probably sounds rather cautious, very cautious even, too but you may agree you’re, for example, dealing with wild animals in their own natural area, as I was saying, so they’re not like those you get to meet on a typical zoo tour.

I mean you shouldn’t expect, right, those sort of barriers. While it’s really cool to actually see them up close, remember these guys are wild and need to, typically, be respected from the angle of safety and, similarly to you, not feeling as though you’re invading their tiny place, like very tiny place, really.

Bird Watching Paradise: Is It for Everyone, Though?

Lake Naivasha birds

Okay, anyone who even slightly enjoys birds is likely going to go to pieces in Naivasha, maybe, possibly. You know, there are hundreds of different species of birds there. Arguably, that’s every shade and size of, actually, feathered wildlife.

Now, if birds, typically, are really not your ‘thing’ and you’re, literally, alright literally, being dragged along, you are going to want to at least value what a very tranquil experience can give. I understand that isn’t always that appealing though. I mean for some that does feel fairly underwhelming and sometimes uninteresting. Just remember: it’s probably a great chance to really chill, just to take pictures of a tranquil landscape, literally, alright, and the scenery might still please, naturally.

Making It Happen: The Practical Stuff

Alright, time to look at how to actually pull this off, basically. Getting to Hells Gate and Lake Naivasha might feel, even might literally feel, alright, a bit complicated to organize, frankly, especially if this is your first safari ever. Many people go with an organized tour from Nairobi, basically that’s what you do, as a matter of fact. But, it’s not very hard if you actually wish to really plan independently, typically.

Think a lot about, but only think, if a self drive rental, still, feels like it matches your confidence level as that choice often gets, sometimes typically gets, very good flexibility. By the way, you probably need to have some solid haggling power and possibly a trusted guide, usually, to actually find those reliable deals when booking on arrival and the park fees too, obviously. No one, for instance, will negotiate if they are not aware there are deals in place!

What’s the Best Time to Visit, Still?

Kenya weather

Anyway, timing literally is basically almost everything! I would even claim everything! A bit cooler and much dryer weather in January and February might literally suit you in an interesting sort of way. Then the months of June through October also seem to have that same type of, actually very good, weather pattern, allegedly.

I should explain that avoiding those long rain times, alright that means staying clear in March, April and November and also December seems like it makes the cycling less complicated. Plus you’ll notice and that wildlife is that tiny bit easier and so that is because it comes out much closer to watering points. Keep in mind, always, that means the crowds can be very significant at those peak season points, literally.

What to Pack: The Essentials?

safari packing list

To point out, what do I pack, and in other words, is it much different than I’m literally wearing at any other, so typical, hiking expedition? Well I suppose, to say the obvious I would probably dress very comfortably but do note how to best get the optimum layers together as this basically affects the sun and can give significant temperature differences. That hat? Still so important, like very important, for keeping so cool plus also away, for example, the annoying sunburn, and so basically it’s a very cool and a very literal must have. Very good walking shoes are, typically also recommended that, literally is so cool also, even extremely so!

Arguably, what about all the technical items like that very decent camera equipment for grabbing hold of those great wildlife captures! You definitely have to bring it plus probably grab that pair of some rather brilliant binoculars. In general, even at the best zoom level nothing ever typically beats or compares as much to as some nice crisp detail to actually watching and literally viewing things right closer from what actually stands right outside your very actual eyes. By the way, please please never fail to really get that mosquito repellant.

Is Hells Gate and Lake Naivasha Really Worth The Time?

So, do I feel as though it’s absolutely very well, you know like actually perfectly, actually worth that time? Alright it actually rather boils directly down to a couple or probably just some separate points which are extremely worth giving an interest towards, usually. A lot or very typically boils straight back around really for you if basically you are up for just some properly incredible photo points. That means not literally having the issues being just some kind of very average car that stops it from getting literally just any old wildlife snapshots.

Now is cycling or even is walking plus some nice pretty fun boat ventures the best way that literally actually speaks right toward exactly where some excitement very actually lives exactly within yourself as such that is what could be done. And I guess that is absolutely cool. Still, to sum up, that is if you typically prefer only basically viewing wildlife and just relaxing it’s definitely literally literally probably not too bad plus it doesn’t totally actually stack literally against those alternatives too plus that really amazing and properly good pretty game based experience literally at what I call more proper traditional safari destinations. Also I did not typically mention if perhaps that chance which I did not literally touch on actually towards this becoming your first foray directly or really in the correct possible range or sphere toward the awesome amazing really amazing very special land of wildlife adventures, obviously.
