Hells Gate & Lake Naivasha Boat Ride Review: Is it Worth it?

So, you’re thinking of hitting up Hells Gate National Park and maybe going for that boat ride on Lake Naivasha, huh? That’s actually a pretty cool plan! This part of Kenya just is full of surprises, and people come from really far away to see the neat nature and wildlife. I mean, a Hells Gate and Lake Naivasha trip can actually be a real adventure, but knowing what you’re getting yourself into is pretty helpful. This review has pretty much all you might want to know so you can decide if it is really your kind of experience.

What’s the Deal with Hells Gate National Park?

Basically, Hells Gate is like a national park but unlike others. I mean, there’s not really loads of predators, that means that you’re free to wander a bit on foot or bike. And that’s quite different, is that what you expect?. Located just south of Lake Naivasha, it has incredible scenery, from towering cliffs to deep gorges. The park has cool rock formations which come from old volcanoes, is that not neat? It got its name, apparently, because early explorers thought this was almost like a gateway to the underworld, I didn’t know that until recently! The geothermal activity also is that very visible, so there are hot springs and geysers around. All that geological activity does make it rather hot, by the way. But this park really allows you to have a closer relationship with the environment and the animals who hang out there.

Why a Lake Naivasha Boat Ride?

Alright, so after baking yourself in the sun at Hells Gate, you might feel like something relaxing. Well, that’s the Naivasha boat tour. Lake Naivasha actually is a big, freshwater lake. And that makes a perfect place for watching birds, since literally hundreds of species hang around the area. I’m serious, you can see fish eagles grabbing fish out of the lake, there is very many colorful kingfishers diving into the water, and cormorants are pretty common too. As a matter of fact the lake is a protected area and recognized internationally. Other than birds, the boat cruises are really great to just see hippos lounging in the water and giraffes, zebras, and buffalo grazing near the shores. I think that going on a boat makes wildlife watching completely different as that also offers very awesome photo opportunities from a totally cool perspective.

My Experience: Hells Gate and Lake Naivasha in One Day

Hells Gate National Park biking

Actually, my day started super early. So, I got to the park’s entrance, paid the entry fee (which, incidentally, I found cheaper booked online), and hopped on my bicycle. Biking actually is a neat way to experience Hells Gate, but, you know, it gets pretty tiring in the heat. I mean the views made the hard parts almost worth it: massive cliffs, scattered gazelles, and, in the end, the gorge. Now that gorge part! Is that fun, it does require some climbing and wading through some streams with hot water! I almost recommend wearing hiking shoes for that! Anyway, after Hells Gate I went straight to Lake Naivasha.

We really negotiated a price with a boat operator (a bit cheaper, of course). On the water, it did feel quite refreshing after the heat of Hells Gate. And right away the amount of birds was nearly amazing. They really are everywhere!. The hippos were rather cool, as they pop their heads out now and then. Also, the guide told us loads of stuff, regarding the lake’s ecology and also stories. At the end, that’s kind of a long day. That means, from super hot to super relaxing, the trip pretty much hit all the marks of a decent adventure. But is that something for everyone?

Things to Think About: Planning Tips

Alright, before going you should think of this, is that okay? Hells Gate actually is very hot, so just make sure you pack loads of water and some sunscreen. Dressing smart includes layers to handle the changes in heat if you also visit Naivasha lake. Bringing binoculars actually makes a big difference during the boat ride so you can admire the wildlife better. I mean, seriously, you might save money if you just book packages together but doing a bit of comparison beforehand is never a bad idea to ensure it works well for your travel dates. Basically, go in the early morning or pretty late afternoon to enjoy cooler times for biking in Hells Gate. So that avoids the crazy high temperatures of midday.

Who Would Dig This Trip?

I mean, this tour will pretty much suit outdoorsy persons that likes easy adventures and also doesn’t mind, is that right? The boat ride might really just please bird watchers but there is very cool landscapes that all of the photographers can really adore in the park, as well. So families? Actually, it could really depend on how the kids handle the heat and walking/biking; the gorge walk particularly can be a lot for some of them. As a matter of fact, budget travelers might like that since the park costs actually are pretty reasonable (relative to loads of different wildlife parks within Kenya anyway). Do you look for luxurious travels? Possibly consider overnight stays nearby that would add very elegant and comfortable places if your budget may not be the issue.

Is That Lake Naivasha Boat Trip Worth It?

Seriously, is that a question for everyone’s preferences anyway. Do you dig animals or scenery and being outdoorsy? You will probably really appreciate visiting Hells Gate or getting on the lake cruise, just like me!. Do you want some sort of chill relaxation time? A few of the tours mix it well. But it is not so nice in case that sounds a little bit physical so I am serious maybe relax or look around other things! I suggest taking this seriously to balance any desire of saving and not losing one whole day trip so you can save some money when your satisfaction falls down there in comparison, don’t waste money or some free days!
