Golden Gate to Sausalito Bike Tour: An Honest Review
Thinking about doing that bike ride from San Francisco, across the Golden Gate Bridge, to Sausalito? That’s a super idea, so many folks think that’s an amazing way to see the city and get some exercise. We recently did the San Francisco Golden Gate to Sausalito Bike Tour, and, just maybe, have some thoughts that you might find useful for planning your own outing. Getting across the Golden Gate Bridge on two wheels and exploring Sausalito are memorable experiences. It’s almost, like your, bucket-list kind of stuff. Hopefully, this helps you decide if it’s for you!
What to Expect: Getting Started
First off, so many tour companies offer this exact ride. Many rentals give you pretty much, or literally, the same experience, at varying price points. They’re usually clustered around Fisherman’s Wharf. This, really, makes comparing prices pretty straightforward. We grabbed our bikes from a place near Pier 41; so it’s a really super convenient spot to kick things off.
The tour starts with a quick bike fitting. It’s typically, sort of, nothing fancy, but they make sure the seat is at the correct height. That, naturally, is crucial for comfort, I mean, especially if you aren’t a frequent cyclist. They give you a helmet, too, which, clearly, you really, absolutely, need to wear. Then comes a briefing where they go over the route. That tends to be mostly showing you a map and giving some basic pointers. It is also likely reminding you to stay in designated bike lanes. Is that generally enough to prepare you? We would guess so, given how popular the tour is.
The initial part, actually anyway, of the ride takes you through Fisherman’s Wharf. Be prepared, I mean, it can be crazy with people! Still, basically, it is part of the charm of San Francisco. After that, you ride along the waterfront, so pretty quickly you’re treated to killer views of the bay and Alcatraz. It’s literally, just like, postcard-perfect spots. This is the most crowded section of the route and does have lots of tourists.
The Golden Gate Bridge Experience
Reaching the Golden Gate Bridge bike path, you will probably start climbing, so get ready to put those quads to work. This, very, isn’t Mount Everest or something, yet it’s still a noticeable incline. Take it slow, and, likely, you will be okay. The bike path can, rather, get crowded, too, particularly on weekends. Be courteous, okay? So make sure you pass other riders respectfully. You want to avoid accidents that really are awful for all. Once you’re on the bridge, you might find yourself stopping constantly for photos. That seems to be pretty standard operating procedure for most people. You, really, want to grab the view! The city behind you, the ocean stretching out… It’s, kind of, an incredible thing to experience. Don’t forget to keep your eye on where you’re going, because there’s often wind and tourists taking pictures. You are, very, trying to take the sights, too. However, try doing it safely.
It almost feels windy on the bridge, or really more-so, is the norm. Dress accordingly, I mean, even on a sunny day. We saw, almost, many people unprepared and shivering. Layers really would be a great plan! As a matter of fact, once you reach the other side of the bridge, there’s usually a great view. Very soon the whole of San Francisco looks fantastic, particularly on a clear day. Take some time to really take it all in before rolling down into Sausalito.
Exploring Sausalito
The ride down into Sausalito is a nice easy one, so now your brakes might get more of a workout. Sausalito is so, so, cute. Still, the stores and restaurants feel touristy. This is pretty expected in a spot that pulls in so many visitors. However, there’s still something charming. Maybe, you feel that is there, that is different about being there.
We spent a little time walking around, and, really, maybe grabbed some lunch, which we honestly would say was nothing special. The view, though, was pretty good. It just might be an average meal that you’ll forget eventually, in what’s almost a fairytale village with views. Seriously, after exploring, we hopped on the ferry back to San Francisco. It’s almost a ferry specifically catering to bikes and tourists, yet that, perhaps, it is super easy. The ferry ride itself also gives killer photo opportunities. Take a moment, likely, as you head back towards the city, and the Alcatraz looms over the water, and feel some appreciation.
Bike Quality and Comfort
The bikes are what they are. We would say our rentals were basic. So do not expect something fancy. They were mechanically sound. However, you could, more or less, tell they got a lot of use. The seats, too, might not be super comfortable. If you’re sensitive, a padded seat cover just could be a good idea. This will really make the ride better. I am not a cyclist, but, really honestly, that can really help a bunch!
One little heads-up: that you, clearly, should inspect your bike, thoroughly, before leaving the rental place. I want to say it’s to avoid getting blamed for prior damage, but, like you would hope it’s for peace of mind. Making sure the brakes work, and all is in good condition before you take to the road.
Is the Golden Gate to Sausalito Bike Tour Worth It?
Is that tour really actually worth doing? Basically, it comes down to what you want out of it. We would have to say it’s one of the best ways to really see the Golden Gate Bridge. Getting outside in the elements while seeing iconic landmark is cool. Is the overall “tour” a mind-blowing, wonderful, and fantastic deal? Probably not. You might just rent a bike. That’s one to avoid lines and schedules.
However, for many, doing it as a tour gives you a more structured experience, so a guided version will save some money. Plus, there’s the convenience factor of knowing that they will help out, anyway, if you have mechanical issues on the way. Honestly, there is comfort. It’s honestly worth it, even if it feels a bit touristy. If you like a relaxed pace, fantastic sights, and really the idea of cycling across an iconic bridge, then you will almost certainly like it.
For experienced cyclists seeking a challenge? Or almost something rugged? It just may not really be that. But hey, it’s, like you said, an exceptional day out.

- Sausalito is cute, still, but more or less pretty touristy, to be frank.
