Full Day Tour: Ballestas Islands and Huacachina Oasis From Lima—Is It Really Worth It?
Planning a trip to Peru and wondering if that day tour from Lima to the Ballestas Islands and Huacachina Oasis is, like, really a good option? I did this trip, so I’m going to share what it’s, actually, like, what you can expect, and whether or not I reckon it’s worthwhile. Packing multiple attractions into a single day can, sometimes, feel rushed, yet the allure of wildlife encounters and desert landscapes close to Lima is very, very tempting, isn’t it?
The Early Start: Getting From Lima
So, the day kicks off early, often very early, which can be, a bit, rough, honestly. Expect to be picked up from your hotel in Lima anytime from 3:00 AM to 5:00 AM, arguably even earlier, to catch your bus down the coast. Now, that bus ride can stretch for approximately four hours, that is to say, quite a long time, bringing you closer to Paracas, where your adventure begins. Try to, maybe, grab a few more hours of shut-eye on the bus or come prepared with something to keep you busy! Also, a comfy neck pillow could be your best friend on this one.
Ballestas Islands: The “Poor Man’s Galapagos”?
Once you arrive in Paracas, you will, potentially, head straight to the harbor for a boat tour of the Ballestas Islands, it could be that easy. Very often called “the Poor Man’s Galapagos,” these islands teem with life, or at least a huge amount, that is to say, loads of marine birds and mammals. Think huge colonies of noisy, squawking sea lions, or maybe Humboldt penguins waddling around, and various seabirds soaring above. That air does have quite a potent smell of guano, which is bird droppings, to be honest, so it’s, maybe, not ideal if you’re overly sensitive, honestly, but the sheer abundance of wildlife is, usually, worth holding your nose for a bit.
Lunch and Travel to Huacachina
After that boat tour, you are, probably, going to grab some lunch in Paracas, which may, maybe, give you a chance to sample local seafood, actually, before hopping on another bus, a slightly shorter trip, you know, this time to Huacachina. This portion is, basically, quite rushed if you want to spend some time viewing Paracas, that is to say, the time flies. Be prepared for quick turnarounds, so too pack light to easily move your stuff around.
Huacachina: Dunes and Thrills
Huacachina is, in some respects, something else entirely—a literal oasis set amidst huge sand dunes, if I may say so myself. You may be offered an option of a thrilling dune buggy ride, maybe, followed by sandboarding. Hold on tight, too, it can be a real rollercoaster ride, and cruising up and down those dunes is very exciting. The sandboarding is often more about the experience than actual snowboarding skills, in other words, it’s fun no matter what your level is, really! As the sun starts to drop, you get this absolutely breathtaking view of the sunset over the dunes. Seriously, it’s one of those scenes that’ll probably stay with you, that is to say, stunning, if you like this kind of thing.
The Long Ride Back to Lima
As the day winds down, you start the approximately four-hour bus ride back to Lima, typically arriving quite late—think around 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM, pretty much, which can feel brutal after such an early start. Just a bit of planning, too, ensure your Lima hotel is expecting you and consider packing some snacks for the trip back.
Is It Worth It? Considerations
So, is this whirlwind tour really worth your precious time and money? Actually, it really depends, doesn’t it? You’re packing in a lot of activities into a single day, or at least trying too, it does come with quite a bit of travel time, so I might argue that there is less time to properly explore each spot, that is to say, this experience is jam-packed and there is quite a time investment needed to do it.
On the one hand, if you’re, like, short on time in Peru and want to see a wide range of sights quickly, I think, this could be an absolutely superb way to do it. That wildlife viewing in the Ballestas and the exhilarating dune adventures in Huacachina are genuinely unique experiences, really. If you fully embrace it and have the attitude of someone making the most of their precious time, it is probably the right experience for you.
However, if you, actually, prefer a slower pace and more depth, it’s usually the case that spending a night or two in Paracas and Huacachina might, potentially, be much better. You’d have time to fully explore the Paracas National Reserve, or to just soak in the ambiance of Huacachina without feeling quite as rushed, you know?
