Full Day Pinzon Island & La Fe Snorkeling: An Honest Review

Dreaming of seeing the Galapagos Islands? You know, with all the unique wildlife, those rugged landscapes, and that incredible chance to snorkel with creatures you only see on nature shows? If so, a full-day tour to Pinzon Island, you see, finished with some time snorkeling at La Fe, so that could be just what you’re looking for. Yet, it’s almost always a good idea to go in with some idea of what to actually expect, right? In this review, you know, I’ll talk about my own experience on this particular trip, that should give you a solid idea of what you can anticipate, too it’s almost. Basically, I’m covering what the trip involves, that is, the sights you’ll get to take in, just how good the snorkeling is, and also any potential downsides, of course, so you can determine if this tour is really right for you.

What’s the Deal with Pinzon Island?

Pinzon Island Giant Tortoise

Pinzon Island, sometimes it’s called Duncan Island, actually has a somewhat less touristy vibe compared to a few other spots in the Galapagos, alright? So, really, it’s a small, uninhabited island. That’s home, actually, to a few pretty cool residents – marine iguanas, those Galapagos hawks, and you know what made the Galapagos so very famous, giant tortoises. These tortoises, yet, are smaller compared to others in the Galapagos. These, very, are the real draw, that alone makes the trip worthwhile, I think. During the boat ride to the island, you might just spot dolphins or whales, or sometimes even both if you’re lucky, I suppose.

The island is what’s called a “visitor site,” actually meaning, that you can’t just wander off on your own. Trips here, arguably, are tightly controlled. They, arguably, require a licensed naturalist guide, too it’s almost, this keeps the island protected and the wildlife undisturbed. Once you arrive, typically you’ll start with a short walk on the island, you see, your guide points out all the unique plant life, those cool lava formations, and yeah, those chilled-out animals. The landscape, literally, is stark. So, then it’s rugged. You see, black lava rocks contrast, more or less, with the turquoise water, actually making for some excellent photo opportunities, that alone can justify going, you know?

La Fe Snorkeling: Close Encounters of the Fishy Kind

La Fe Snorkeling Galapagos

La Fe, I believe, is a snorkeling spot that’s usually visited after Pinzon Island. This place, basically, is known for calmer waters. Because it is known for its shallow areas, this is actually really ideal for less experienced snorkelers, so it works for kids, even, I’m saying. You can find yourself swimming next to sea turtles, those playful sea lions, and loads of vividly colored fish. Now, typically, you get provided with snorkeling gear on the boat. Though, in some respects, I’d check beforehand to see what’s available. You may, maybe, feel happier if you have your own gear, particularly if you use prescription masks or anything.

The snorkeling area, alright, is mostly fairly shallow, but also keep an eye on currents, that alone could keep you safe, alright? Even in a protected area like this, more or less, those ocean currents, these will still be something to think about, naturally. The guides are experienced. And the guides will usually point out interesting things to look at. Though, honestly, really, even without their help, like your chances of seeing something incredible underwater are almost guaranteed, or are at least high, I gather.

Wildlife Sightings: It’s a Lottery, More or Less

Galapagos Marine Iguana

One thing, truly, about any kind of wildlife tour is there isn’t any guarantee to see absolutely everything. So, really, on Pinzon, seeing the giant tortoises in their natural habitat is highly likely, or is typically guaranteed, right? That said, other wildlife sightings are a bit more unpredictable. Now, Galapagos hawks might, possibly, be soaring overhead, that’s cool. Or marine iguanas are usually chilling on the rocks, that’s nice, too. Then at La Fe, though, or arguably anytime when you’re sailing in the Galapagos, you’ve got to be ready for anything from sea lions and manta rays, and those amazing hammerhead sharks, alright?

If you’re thinking about specific animals you really hope to spot, well, alright, chat with your tour operator. Though, really, be prepared that you can’t force wildlife to perform for you. I saw several turtles on my trip to La Fe, as a matter of fact, that made my week, that makes you glad you came all this way. Actually, this is why you’ve flown across the globe to get to this remote part of the world. However, really, someone on the boat with me, anyway, he really wanted to see those penguins, that’s natural. Sadly, though, he just didn’t catch a glimpse, so it’s just luck of the draw.

What’s Included and What’s Not? Details, Sort Of.

Galapagos Tour Boat

It’s a very good idea to look very closely into what your Pinzon Island and La Fe snorkeling tour actually includes. I’m suggesting, right, reading the fine print. Basically, those most basic tours generally cover the boat trip itself. Lunch should be included, then your licensed naturalist guide. Snorkeling gear is usually provided. Though, actually, it’s often those really basic kinds of masks, so bear that in mind, anyway. Check about wetsuits, those can really enhance your snorkeling experience in what might, arguably, be cool water, alright?

Not included is those extras, like drinks, tipping the crew, and sometimes that park entrance fee, that’s a killer at $100 USD per adult, so, of course, factor that cost into your budget. Check whether the company does pick up and drop off from your hotel, it can save you a bit of hassle at either end of what is, certainly, going to be a pretty exhausting day, or what is naturally an exhausting day. Also, though, check if they actually run the trip if only a few people book, I think this can happen out of season and with smaller operators. Ask if there are minimum participant numbers, so that you don’t end up scrambling to make an alternate plan, well, arguably the day before you wanted to go exploring.

Potential Downsides: Keep These In Mind, More Or Less

Galapagos Crowded Boat

Now, some trips to Pinzon Island, too it’s almost, it seems, that they pack quite a few people onto the boat. The island visit itself, right, it doesn’t really involve masses of walking. So, naturally, fitness usually isn’t a problem. Yet, then it’s helpful, you see, if you don’t mind the idea of spending a day with lots of other tourists. If that’s going to annoy you, then actually look at some smaller group tour options, still, those will likely cost more.

The boat ride could, seemingly, be bumpy, sometimes even very bumpy, the trip I took encountered some fairly choppy waters, actually. Should you happen to get seasick, I’d honestly recommend taking some medication before you even set off, or it is really a good idea. Similarly to the previous sentence, if you struggle being on boats, then potentially this might just not be the tour for you. Lastly, as I mentioned previously, well, honestly, it can all get rather pricey once you add on those park fees and extras.

Making it a Great Trip: Recommendations, or Thoughts

Snorkeling Tips Galapagos

Okay, if you think this sounds pretty amazing. Though, naturally, there are also those downsides. You could, you know, help maximize your enjoyment of the day, too it’s almost. And of course, to avoid regrets when you reflect on that costly vacation. Let me make those experiences all that more awesome with just some forward planning. And these, you know, make for pretty great talking points on social media or amongst pals in later years.

  • Book in Advance: Tours, actually, can fill up really quickly. Especially then it’s high season. Basically, to make sure you aren’t disappointed, in fact, book well ahead of time.
  • Check the Itinerary: Really make sure you know all the details of the tour, too it’s almost. Or just ask that operator, honestly, and specifically just ask.
  • Pack Smart: It seems sunscreen, a hat, water. These are important. Don’t, honestly, forget those.
  • Be Respectful: To me this is a no-brainer, you see, admire the wildlife, yet, anyway, just give it its space. Actually, it’s these things that just let these trips work at all.
  • Bring a Camera: The landscape. Oh my God, you know, you really will just have to snap the moment. Then it’ll be there for always. Snapping those shots. Okay, so be prepared. Honestly, that would really remind you just how incredible that adventure actually was.

Arguably, that snorkeling can be brilliant, it really is almost hard to overstate just how good that snorkeling at La Fe can be. But also, you have got those possible choppy boat rides and it can all get a little busy in high season, more or less. Just make sure you carefully weigh all those pluses and minuses before booking.
