Friends NYC Experience Review: Is It Worth It?
So, you’re thinking of checking out the Friends Experience in New York City, huh? Well, I took the plunge recently, and, basically, I’m here to give you the lowdown on what it’s actually like. Friends, that hit sitcom from the ’90s, still has fans going strong, and, clearly, this interactive exhibit aims to pull you right into Monica and Rachel’s apartment, Central Perk, and, just a bit, other iconic sets. Is it a must-see for die-hard fans, or, instead, is it a tourist trap? I’m here to help you make up your own mind about that!
First Impressions: Could This BE Any More Nostalgic?
Alright, walking into the Friends Experience is kind of like stepping back in time – that’s obvious. If, arguably, you grew up watching the show (like I did!), the sight of those familiar sets is bound to stir up some feelings, so get ready for that! Very quickly, you’re greeted with recreations of Monica’s apartment, Joey and Chandler’s bachelor pad, and, actually, Central Perk. The attention to detail is, in some respects, very cool; think picture frames, cushions, and, apparently, even the layout is spot-on. That is, if you have a really good memory, you’ll probably notice what’s what! So, straight away, there’s that nostalgic factor working its magic.
Anyway, something to bear in mind, the whole place is basically selfie heaven, isn’t it? You know, different photo ops are around every corner, from posing on the orange couch at Central Perk (which, obviously, you have to do) to sticking your head through the purple door of Monica’s apartment. So, if you’re the kind of person who enjoys snapping pictures for Instagram, get ready for your followers to see it. Also, I’m going to warn you, depending on how busy it is, expect a short wait to take pictures at certain spots; it’s almost a popular place, what did you think? You see, as much as I was enjoying taking photos, I started to feel like, really, it was geared a little more towards those perfect social media moments than anything super substantial.
Interactive Elements: How Engaging Is It Very?
Okay, so, it’s called the Friends Experience, but just how interactive is it actually? Well, besides the photo ops, there are a couple of cool touches that I’ll explain now. For instance, you can peek through Rachel and Monica’s peephole and, you know, find out who’s on the other side. Very exciting, that. You can also sit at the Central Perk counter, that’s right, feeling just like the gang while sipping on, arguably, some imaginary coffee (because, sadly, they don’t actually serve any coffee there). So, little moments like those bring the show to life just a little.
But, frankly, I felt a bit let down that, actually, the interactive parts didn’t go much further than that. Could be that they could have added more games, trivia, or something a bit more engaging than just, basically, posing for photos. To be honest, if you’re anticipating a super-immersive adventure, manage your expectations or else! Still, for fans, these small interactive things add a bit of fun. I mean, you can even recreate the famous “Pivot!” scene. You know the one, when Ross tries to get that couch up the stairs? Yep, you get to yell, “Pivot!” yourself. If that sounds fun, and, in fact, I think it’s very fun, you’ll have a great time!
Photo Opportunities: Get Ready to Say “Cheese!”
Without doubt, the core draw of the Friends Experience lies in its picture-taking possibilities, and, frankly, they don’t disappoint – well, not entirely, and there’s still more to say. Every set is staged to create fun moments. Pose on the orange couch at Central Perk, re-enact the Thanksgiving turkey scene, or, you know, relax in Chandler and Joey’s recliner. Basically, there are scenes everywhere ready to recreate and fill up your phone’s memory with images.
Having said all that, expect it to be crowded. So, while the photo ops are fun, battling through crowds and, possibly, waiting in lines to snap your shot does diminish the experience a bit. That being said, maybe if you visit during off-peak hours, or, more or less, if you get a timed ticket, you can sidestep those headaches; that’s worth taking into account. In short, bring patience and be ready to, actually, strike your poses fast!
The Gift Shop: Souvenirs Galore
What’s an experience without a gift shop to raid before heading home, yeah? So, the Friends Experience, that is, of course, offers a selection of merchandise ranging from shirts and mugs to, clearly, keychains and other collectibles. The quality varies a little; some items feel like good souvenirs, yet, others are what you might call a bit mass-produced.
Basically, be aware of the pricing, too, alright? Merchandise can lean toward the costly side, like your usual tourist traps, and, naturally, that’s to be anticipated. Still, if you’re trying to find the ideal gift for a Friends enthusiast or just want something to remember the day, you can probably find something you like here. Also, by the way, do consider your budget before getting too carried away! That being said, treat yourself!
