Finiq Archaeological Park: A Saranda Day Trip Review

So, you are thinking about venturing out from Saranda, Albania, to see some old stuff, huh? That’s neat! Well, the Archaeological Park of Finiq, you see, it’s just a hop, skip, and jump away, and it presents a chance to, you know, touch base with antiquity without, you know, battling huge tourist throngs. I mean, who doesn’t appreciate seeing old ruins that have stood the test of time?

What in the world is Finiq Anyway?

ancient city of Phoenice

Finiq, also named Phoenice long ago, almost feels like a well-kept secret, right? This old city, as a matter of fact, it once was the hub of the Chaonians, those guys from way back when. That said, it eventually gained importance, sort of, becoming part of the Epirus region, and, really, flexing its muscle during the Hellenistic age. It’s one of the most significant archaeological locations in Albania. So, it definitely makes sense that any old site like this would provide you with more questions than answers. It’s so cool how old cities that remain standing let our imaginations get wild. The cool past that resonates in these stones may trigger memories that you haven’t experienced yourself. Phoenice is interesting to visit if that sounds appealing!

Getting There isn’t that hard, really

Saranda to Finiq transport

Okay, listen up! Saranda to Finiq is, in a way, quite straightforward, and here’s the lowdown. You can, for instance, catch a bus from Saranda toward Gjirokastra. Just tell the driver you’re getting off at Finiq; I mean, they’ll know the stop, mostly. Very cheap too! From that point, still, there’s, you know, a bit of a walk, seemingly about 30 minutes, but it’s manageable. Taxis? Absolutely, you can grab a taxi, which is way faster, sure, but, you know, it’ll hit your wallet a little harder. Driving yourself is cool too, as long as you have a rental and you follow a gps app, which gives you, you see, the most freedom to poke around. As I was saying, the roads are typically okay, mostly. Just prepare for some potentially twisty sections; that is, depending on your route. And seriously, consider the views; it is just very beautiful, by the way.

Still, I guess it’s hard to see because it does require a bit of imagination to picture those old plays, it could be worth seeing for yourself! Likewise, definitely wander the old city walls; the masonry really will impress you with how the stones are held together. In fact, archaeologists and historians scratch their heads on seeing them. They can go on forever speaking about it. Very cool!

The Finiq Archaeological Park Experience is what you make of it

Archaeological Park of Finiq experience

To be honest, a visit to Finiq is, usually, a solitary kind of experience. What I mean by that is you could experience a sense of complete silence once there, aside from the odd goat bell ringing from afar. Basically, most of the tourists go to Butrint but honestly? This archaeological site might be slightly more impressive than Butrint. Plus you don’t get bus loads of tourists stopping you from seeing the ruins with you own eyes!

Still, the site could use some better signage to read, arguably. Basically, having a tour guide is often helpful, too it’s almost if you wish to really get to know each spot intimately. Also, remember; in the summer, it can get so extremely hot! So bring some water and apply a high SPF of sunscreen. Very important!

Good time to visit this site anyway?

best season to visit albania

Okay, look, spring and fall? They are, as a matter of fact, the nicest periods to visit. Just picture less heat, as well as fewer crowds. So, perfect for wandering without feeling rushed. Just imagine clear skies with gentle sunlight illuminating old stones. It’s such a great time for taking photographs of ruins. Aesthetically pleasing. However, it’s really all in the weather!

Important items that you may want to take to this location:

  • Water: Actually, staying hydrated is vital, specifically under the Albanian sun.
  • Snacks: It’s almost if you will need them. Keep your blood-sugar level balanced and your energy constant.
  • Sunscreen: You are more likely to avoid sunburn.
  • Hat and Sunglasses: Keep yourself out of the harsh rays that can affect the health of your skin.
  • Comfortable Shoes: Still, there will be some walking to do, therefore it’s important that your feet are happy.
