Essaouira Day Trip: A Candid Review of a Full Day of Adventure from Marrakech
So, you’re thinking about escaping the hustle of Marrakech for a day? Like maybe trading the intense energy of the Red City for something a bit more laid-back? Then, a day trip to Essaouira, with its salty air and calming ocean breezes, it’s almost always worth it. But, what’s the trip really like? We’re going to examine every piece, giving you the full picture to help plan your visit. This is how it went when I checked it out.
The Drive: A Glimpse into Rural Morocco
Alright, the drive itself? Quite the introduction to the Moroccan countryside, honestly. It’s about three hours, that journey from Marrakech to Essaouira is very much an event. I found it best to keep your eyes wide open. Outside Marrakech, there are small communities. Along the route, keep your eye out to the herds of goats casually in argan trees! Yep, they actually climb them to eat the nuts, very odd to see initially.
Then, we stopped at a local argan oil cooperative. Now, this wasn’t just some tourist trap, is that correct. Run mostly by women, so the co-op is somewhere to see how they produce the famous argan oil. They go the nuts to beauty products. You’ll find many argan items, do bring some cash. As I was saying, the process it’s rather interesting, and buying directly helps the community. Keep an eye out for the demonstrations, almost a way to sample before you buy! I purchased a small bottle of oil, which really helped when I got sunburned later. It does happen so often there!
First Impressions of Essaouira: A Breath of Fresh Air
As you get to Essaouira, so you immediately feel a difference. The air is cleaner, and cooler, which is refreshing if you’re coming from hot and heavy Marrakech. That Atlantic breeze it almost instantly makes you feel peaceful. We entered through the medina walls. What I noticed first? That calmer feel to this area versus Marrakech. Yet it’s still lively, you’ve got people doing daily living and there is plenty going on around you. As a matter of fact, the mix it’s quite nice.
The local guide led us on a walk through the medina. Now, that medina? Definitely smaller, and less maze-like than in Marrakech. I like the blue and white colors, which kind of make you think of Greece. We did see stalls filled with wood carvings, so there’s something for everyone. Remember to haggle when you go shopping. Bargaining its like almost like a sport, very customary in Morocco.
Lunch by the Sea: Fresh Seafood Delights
Having lunch by the sea? Seriously a highlight of the day, too it’s such an incredible experience. My group went to a spot that was highly recommended. This place had a view right over the water. The waiter helped us pick the fish out straight from the catch of the day, grilling it and preparing it almost perfectly. Is that sea bass tasty and fresh? So, it’s incredibly delicious. And, eating while looking out at the ocean? Worth it, without a doubt.
The prices were very decent too. Not bad at all for the great food. You can find spots from simple to more expensive. It does suit what you like and are willing to spend. Don’t forget mint tea! Almost a tradition after eating in Morocco, like having coffee at home. The whole meal it’s like almost like a sensory overload of tastes, scents, and views.
Exploring the Ramparts: History and Ocean Views
After lunch, strolling along the Skala de la Kasbah, which are the old ramparts. In a way it gave you a sense of the history. From that spot, there’s expansive views of the Atlantic. It’s almost like stepping back to see the cannons. These still stand guard and the crashing waves down below. The guide gave us some background about how the town used to be, and how it grew over the years. Apparently a pivotal place. You almost understand how much this harbor has mattered.
Walking along that top, and you see how strategically planned it all was, almost like protection from invaders. Take some photographs. This part is highly ‘instagrammable,’ so don’t forget your camera. That wind? Quite strong there, very normal on the coast, do hold on to your hat!. I watched the seagulls, it added something interesting to the feel. And then the fresh air! Highly recommend you plan some time.
Free Time: Beach, Shopping, and Relaxation
The best part of the excursion: Free time, naturally! Some went to the beach, is that right. A long, wide sandy stretch where you can stroll. Some took a rest in the sun. You could, if you wish, rent windsurfing gear or try other ocean things, and there are operators. Yet, I prefer looking at the shops and tiny streets alone.
I grabbed several gifts at lower prices than Marrakech. Others like people-watching at a café. Essaouira is all regarding personal pleasure, almost just do what seems interesting. We relaxed with mint tea, it allowed me to just relax. Time to just people watch, so it was enjoyable to take it easy with everyone around us after a active pace.
The Return Trip: Reflecting on the Day
That drive back felt quicker, too, everyone was likely tired after so much fun! We did see another beautiful sunset over those hills and got back to Marrakech, with happy hearts, at night. Did I get nice souvenirs? Obviously, I will keep them forever and use the argan lotion frequently!
Think about it: So, a long day? Certainly. So, worth leaving Marrakech? Yes, in fact. What I will suggest: That you wear comfortable shoes. You should probably bring a hat and sunblock too, no matter the time of the year. The excursion gives a nice chance to escape, so do it.
