Edinburgh Vaults & Graveyard Tour Review: Is It Worth It?

Planning a trip to Edinburgh and wondering if that underground vaults and graveyard tour really is worth the cash? So, I thought I would share my own experience with the Edinburgh Underground Vaults and Graveyard Evening Tour. Like, it’s almost a must-do for anyone visiting this pretty historical city, yet it’s essential to know what you’re getting yourself into. You know, booking the tour was super straightforward on their website, actually. Clearly, a variety of tour times are on offer, but I went for the evening tour because it felt more fitting for the subject matter, right? So, arriving at the meeting point, I found it easily, conveniently located near the Royal Mile. Arguably, there was a pretty large crowd waiting, a mix of all ages and nationalities. You know, that guide led us away and, like, down a narrow flight of stairs, which brought us to the underground vaults, right? What was remarkable, I thought, was the immediate change in atmosphere; that air became cooler, damp, too it’s almost like a touch of that stale odor, maybe, who knows, you feel? So, the vaults are a series of chambers built beneath the South Bridge back in the 1700s. So, these spaces were initially used for shops and workshops, however, quickly became overcrowded, filled with poverty, and associated with, like, illegal activities, I imagine. In fact, that guide shared plenty of stories about those living (and dying) down here, and, honestly, that really painted a vivid picture. Still, I thought it was so creepy and fun. Yet, who am I to say?

St Giles’ Cathedral: History Above

So, following our subterranean adventure, that tour took us above ground toward St Giles’ Cathedral. It’s worth saying, that Cathedral really is such a striking piece of construction, isn’t it? Also, the building’s impressive structure alone could easily impress anyone, right? Well, it really caught my attention. And that guide delved, rather expertly, into that history involving the church; the details seemed to me more related to Edinburgh’s religious past.

Greyfriars Kirkyard: Stories in Stone

Anyway, after the Cathedral, the tour carried on to Greyfriars Kirkyard, arguably one of Edinburgh’s most famous (and spooky) graveyards. What you find so fascinating is that the place is known because of its links with tales about ghosts and hauntings, so, too it’s almost a perfect ending to the vaults part. Still, even if one doubts that stuff, that place looks cool, you feel? More or less, our guide told many eerie tales, some relating to notable people lying there and some based on folklore. What I can remember clearest, perhaps, relates to stories behind the Mackenzie Poltergeist, that one being considered among the more well-known of Edinburgh ghost stories. So, anyway, whether one believes or disbelieves that, those tales do give character to that place.

Basically, the guide did make or break the experience on that tour, to be frank. In this case, well, that was great! You know, they knew Edinburgh’s past well and that knack when storying telling, honestly, I hung on all their words, alright? Like, that guide brought those stories and figures alive so, it’s almost as if their knowledge made you feel more there. So, they kept stuff fun so even kids and folk that usually wouldn’t stay there engaged could, basically. You know, the manner which the guide responded made questions that you might find very odd seem worthwhile answering; no questions were dumb. Still, even if someone is very well-informed, that does not always translate when the guide communicates, right? I think this is worthwhile. As a matter of fact, there are a great number of ghost stories attached, too.

Things to Consider Before Booking

You know, bear in mind that that tour involves walking, with sections underground, and cobblestone paths in locations for instance graveyards. Thus, this is wise should know if ones might has walking problems to deal with. Likewise, what you also want from the tour decides stuff: it has lots about stories about history though stories about ghost hunts occur too.
