New York City during the holiday season is something that a lot of folks find pretty wonderful, with a certain kind of magic in the air. It’s almost like the whole city gets this coat of sparkle and good cheer. One spot that seems to really take the Christmas spirit to another level is Dyker Heights, in Brooklyn. This neighborhood, is that right, it has become super known for its crazy, over-the-top Christmas light displays. And you know what? Plenty of companies offer tours to check all of this out, with, too it’s almost like, hot cocoa added as an extra sweet treat. I got to check out one of these tours, and now I want to share all about the experience. It’s so people can see what it’s like, is that something you are in to, and help in picking a tour that’s good for them.
What Makes Dyker Heights So Special?
You know, Dyker Heights, way back when, was basically an Italian-American neighborhood, so some of these old-school residents really started this thing of making super grand Christmas displays way back when in the 1980s. So word then kind of spread, and now folks living there really go all out, trying to be festive and one-up each other with incredible decorations. Very, very elaborate nativity scenes, massive inflatable snowmen, and blinking lights are basically what’s there. So lots of these homes hire pro decorators, which can cost a pretty penny, like, maybe thousands of dollars, yet these folks truly want to give holiday cheer to anyone passing by. The way I see it, it’s kind of wild!
Choosing the Right Tour for You
So, when you start Googling, there are tons of tours of the Dyker Heights Christmas lights, so picking one might look difficult at first, right? You can typically pick tours by length, how you’re going to move around, like on a bus or walking, and, too it’s almost like, what else you get like, a warm drink. Several even begin in Manhattan, so folks don’t have to head to Brooklyn themselves, is that nice or what? Then, what is the way it works, the classic bus tour keeps you toasty while a guide shares interesting tidbits. Arguably, the walking tour will have you right in all the sights and maybe better photo spots.
My Experience: A Night of Lights and Cocoa
The tour I decided to try, arguably, was this bus tour leaving from Midtown Manhattan. Which seems perfect. I want to tell all about this trip. Leaving from there basically took any stress off trying to make it out to Brooklyn on my own via public transportation, so it gave the night a smoother, easier vibe right away, that, arguably, seemed like it gave it a good start. Onboard, the guide did give this running commentary regarding Dyker Heights and other cool spots for holiday lights. And so he even gave facts regarding the history of Dyker Heights, in a way I did find this fascinating, with how it went from a quiet neighborhood into something known for Christmas magic. As the bus crossed into Brooklyn, so it wasn’t only kids all pumped. So you could notice everyone’s excitement for sure rising. Plus, the hot chocolate got passed out, and so that warm, sugary thing made the excitement greater. Then there’s a touch of Christmasy warmth on a chilly night.
The Lights Themselves: Over-the-Top and Amazing
Now comes when we got to Dyker Heights and, I mean, so that’s the wow part. Every single house seemed to have really worked to get everything extra decorated and shiny. So, very over-the-top displays with tons of lights, giant inflatables, and life-size Santa figures, so too it’s almost like you just did not see it anywhere else. Some people’s decorations looked all classic, in a way they kind of showed stories. So they had Nativity scenes, yet so it wasn’s all religion. There was this other place with Disney characters all over, really awesome! So they all had the Christmas spirit!
Because of the bus, we hopped off and went on foot to look closely, so very it was a chance to snap great photos and be next to the craziness. Some folks dress as characters and took pictures. So everything did bring loads of charm, yet just try to be prepared for huge crowds since lots of other people will have this tour, I did hear, very, very important. This crowd adds some spirit yet you’re bumping to others to catch stuff.
Hot Cocoa: A Sweet Addition
The addition of hot cocoa feels, could be, the tours have this welcome treat, is that nice? So it’s a lot like holding this cup while the cold rushes round. Arguably, my cocoa seems to not be premium, and the sweetness fits with all the crazy displays around the streets, with all the lights, for instance. While there it isn’t like you need that drink, you know, to have this feeling great of warmth and cheer during this tour.
Is the Tour Worth It?
If you question, very, very simple, will you enjoy that Dyker Height Christmas Lights tour is a win? This kind of hangs the feel you have and the way see holiday things. As a matter of fact I think that this sounds amazing if you dig over-the-top shows and holiday sparkle, yet it is worth it, that kind of, for a fee if you like someone planning a trek for you with cocoa on hand. Because there the traffic goes kinda bad. So in case someone rides for these types then do your plan without stress, go there for the cheer. If the show will have your spirit. Maybe skip in case you dislike masses or like calmer celebrations and if you like DIY, I believe.
Tips for Making the Most of Your Tour
- So I recommend book your tour prior to a visit. In short because all tour sells, specifically around such dates.
- Check weather forewarnings, just in the case when clothes will keep cold outside. Pack those layers up!
- Bring battery operated charger! So taking light pictures can drain your charge!
- Take a bunch of pictures, like, get Christmas pictures for any time.
- Find food options just in case. Cocoa meets your desires just for a snack but some get empty quicker.
- So that goes for all buses to get better seeing options or to have easier spots and photo catches and avoid seats by tires.
