On the day, a modern, air-conditioned 4×4 arrived at the hotel very promptly. Right from the get-go, that is to say the timeliness, the service gave me some confidence.

On our drive heading away from Dubai’s very busy vibe, our guide started giving some information related to what we could see in the desert. His English? Solid. And his insights into Emirati culture? Pretty impressive. After maybe forty five minutes or so, that is to say not too long, we got to the camp’s entrance. A camel trek at dusk turned out to be one of the parts of the trip I remember best, actually. I had been around camels a fair bit, actually, at zoos, or petting farms, but nothing like this experience; they appear differently out in the expanse of a desert. After everyone climbed aboard (they provide assistance), we set off onto the dunes. Honestly, the camel’s gait was a bit jarring for maybe the first couple of minutes, however that feeling disappeared quickly enough, with my group really quickly settling into that, sort of, swaying movement.

What made the ride genuinely great were those stunning views as the sun began sinking. Plus, people could get henna tattoos—thankfully they only utilize, literally, plant-based dye, in case allergies are a concern. I got one on my hand of something abstract so I wouldn’t stick out as a ‘tourist’ back home.

Afterward, before they actually, genuinely called out the dinner invitations, I chose to smoke a sheesha and speak with other folks visiting Al Khayma Camp. I connected with two travelers from Germany and had fun swapping travel experiences.

The BBQ Dinner and Entertainment

Okay, so let’s talk about this barbecue. There was, basically, plenty to eat for absolutely everybody; even some vegans out there would’ve had their cravings appeased by all the different dishes they provide at that buffet. Plus you will have your basic sides like salads, hummus, and breads that matched it nicely.

I should mention that as everyone ate, we got to enjoy some local entertainment. This belly dancer was super mesmerizing, seemingly doing these really hard moves to classic Arabian music – all the while carrying candle props to, sort of, show extra showmanship. And, basically, who could resist joining that Tanoura dancer as he spun quickly? Really, all those performances combined with eating created that great Arabian Nights ambiance. You’re absolutely having an all-around treat that night.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

Just to clarify things before anyone books their stuff, remember there are factors outside anyone’s sphere of influence which could impact everything. What I want to say is make sure you check everything! For example, if traveling during Ramadan certain entertainments are usually very altered. When that occurs expect they’ve switched up entertainment types, usually substituting in gentler cultural acts rather than going with, like, belly dancing.

In respect to temperatures there should always be caution. Between daytime high heat as well as much colder nights, what I’m saying, in essence, is that dressing in layers becomes necessary whatever point that this year.
