Debre Libanos & Portuguese Bridge: Your Addis Ababa Day Trip Review

Looking for an escape from the energetic streets of Addis Ababa? That getaway, too it’s almost like a different dimension, is probably closer than you might think! So, one pretty popular option is a day trip to Debre Libanos Monastery and the historic Portuguese Bridge. But, that potential outing is perhaps something you’re wondering if it’s genuinely worthwhile, right? Very, very well, I decided to check it out and am here to share, well, my experiences. You could find it helpful!

Getting There: The Drive to Debre Libanos

Driving to Debre Libanos from Addis Ababa

The adventure kicks off with a drive, which can run around 2-3 hours, slightly depending on Addis Ababa’s infamous traffic, or so I hear. Anyway, most tours conveniently include transportation, that part should be covered for you, which is arguably very helpful because you might not really feel like trying to figure out local transport, is that a fair statement? So, that also means you can sit back, well, relax, and, you know, take in the landscapes. As you leave Addis Ababa behind, the scenery does transition dramatically. The busy urban environment gives way to more of the rolling hills, farmland, and just, well, the amazing gorges Ethiopia is widely known for.

That change, it just kind of sets the stage, doesn’t it? A more serene, a somewhat quieter kind of exploration. The drive could be a bit bumpy in sections, like your typical rural roads anywhere really, so, too it’s almost wise to be prepared. Actually, a tip that seems useful, bring some water and snacks for the drive. Oh, that is if, maybe, you have a tendency to get a little peckish. Alright? And it would probably keep those kiddos happy too!

Exploring Debre Libanos Monastery

Inside Debre Libanos Monastery

Debre Libanos Monastery is a genuinely important spiritual site for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. Established way back in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot, the monastery holds a very, very prominent spot in Ethiopian religious history. So, on arrival, it’s quite likely you’ll be greeted by, just, you know, local guides, happy to show you around and share some of, well, the history and significance. That also presents a terrific opportunity to learn more about Ethiopian Orthodoxy, a bit. In a way, the stories linked to Saint Tekle Haymanot are particularly interesting, it tends to be believed he prayed for 7 years standing on one leg! Alright, there you have it. The new church, so it’s actually relatively recent, holds beautiful artwork, I guess. It showcases several biblical scenes and Ethiopian saints, very skillfully. Don’t you agree?

Apart from that, be sure you also visit the cave, that’s very much where Saint Tekle Haymanot is thought to have meditated. It’s naturally a deeply revered place for pilgrims. Inside the monastery grounds, there are a few small museums and other historic spots too. Those could just allow, very, very special deeper exploration of the monastery’s heritage and what it does for its community. Remember that respectful attire is generally requested when visiting, that does apply especially to women, I think. They may need to cover their heads. Just, well, keep that in mind before you visit, maybe.

The Portuguese Bridge: History and Views

Portuguese Bridge near Debre Libanos

Now that we are on to another highlight: the Portuguese Bridge. Despite what its name would have you believe, this construction probably wasn’t even actually built by the Portuguese. Most people think it came to be constructed, you see, by Ethiopians a bit later, and, still, its supposed connection to the Portuguese adds a very, very intriguing layer to its history. It spans a rather deep gorge with just amazing views. That makes it just awesome for photos. I mean, for picture taking!

The landscape that does surround the bridge is seriously breathtaking! In short, so plan for a bit of time to appreciate it. Too it’s almost like, breathe the clean air and just soak in the scenery. For those that like to be active a little, you, like your walking boots?, consider doing one of the little hikes. Well, one that does descend into the gorge. Okay, that’s there and pretty popular! These pretty little treks can definitely offer you, similarly to few other places, different vantage points and a fantastic opportunity to experience the, you know, gorgeous ecosystem.

Wildlife Encounters: Gelada Monkeys

Gelada Monkeys near Debre Libanos

That region around Debre Libanos is a terrific place, literally fantastic, actually, for spotting Gelada monkeys. Just keep an eye out during that drive and when you’re hanging by the Portuguese Bridge! Alright? You may just get pretty lucky. Geladas, too, they are called “bleeding-heart monkeys”. I am saying that is thanks to a patch of pretty bright red skin they have on their chests, I really find them quite awesome. These creatures live solely in the Ethiopian Highlands, by the way. Anyway, seeing them in their habitat is definitely a memorable moment. Be respectful when you do spot wildlife! Actually, just keep a respectful distance. So, naturally, don’t feed them! Like, what you’d usually do!

Planning Your Day Trip: What to Expect

Preparing for Debre Libanos Day Trip

If that potential day trip to Debre Libanos does seem interesting to you, I am saying, there are usually, mostly, several tours on offer originating from Addis Ababa, obviously. Just a thing to remember, prices might be different and they could be including different things. So, naturally, that can range anywhere from your basic transportation to all-inclusive options which have in them also entrance fees, a guide, too potentially a local lunch too. Read what is included! Also, it is smart. Make sure you bring comfortable shoes! Also, sun protection, alright? So, too a bit of warm clothing might just be smart. Oh, particularly, that would be smart if you do plan to visit during the cooler months.

The overall climate around there could be unpredictable, more or less, and that altitude, clearly, might mean things will probably feel chillier than what you expected. Keep in mind that visiting on a weekday might just allow for a less busy experience when compared to heading up on a weekend. Another thing, if you’re real serious about a deep-dive experience, find out how to go about getting an especially knowledgeable guide. Alright, anyway, the level of their insight might really just elevate what you get out of your visit! Just what they’ve learned and absorbed might be very important to hear!

Speaking to expectations: I am suggesting, brace yourself for the bathrooms there! They, umm, that area, so too it’s almost that you might want to take a small bottle of hand sanitizer too. Basically. Okay? Like the other advice. Also, too it’s almost expected, I am suggesting, a bit of extra local cash money just in case, probably if you might just be in the mood for local souvenirs, and even also, for a small tip for your guide if you are feeling exceptionally generous.

Enjoy your Trip
