Dambulla, Anuradhapura & Mihintale: Day Tour Review
Visiting Sri Lanka and wondering if a Dambulla, Anuradhapura, and Mihintale day tour is the way to go? So, that’s what I did, and I’m here to tell you all about my experience. A trip hitting these three key historical spots can sound pretty intense for just a day, that it does, yet it’s very doable if you’re prepared for a bit of a whirlwind.
What to Expect on this Whirlwind Adventure
Before diving into the details, that you should have a decent grasp on what the day will actually look like. It is a long one, alright. Expect to leave early, that you will, probably before sunrise, and not return until well after sunset. You’ll be visiting ancient temples, monuments, and ruins, that you certainly will, and there will be a reasonable amount of walking involved, so comfy shoes are key. That, and being okay with spending a big chunk of the day in a vehicle, that’s important too.
Dambulla Cave Temple: A Colorful Start
Dambulla Cave Temple, or the Golden Temple of Dambulla as some folks say, that was our first stop. This place is kind of incredible, with its five cave temples filled with statues and paintings. Like, I mean, it’s all carved into a giant rock. You do have to climb a fair few stairs to get up there, just keep that in mind, but the view from the top, looking out over the countryside, is definitely worth it. The paintings are, well, they’re old, that they are! Dating back centuries. Each cave has its own distinct character, that’s true. The sheer scale of the place and the artistry involved, pretty amazing, is that not so?
Anuradhapura: History Comes Alive
Next up, that was Anuradhapura, one of Sri Lanka’s ancient capitals. This is a big site, really big, with sprawling ruins of temples, palaces, and stupas. You’ll probably want a guide here, you will, or at least do a bit of research beforehand, or even carry a map, as it’s easy to get a bit lost, that is. The highlight, in my opinion, is the Sri Maha Bodhi, that’s a tree grown from a cutting taken from the tree under which Buddha achieved enlightenment, that’s the belief. It’s an incredibly important pilgrimage site, and the atmosphere there is kind of palpable. We also visited the Ruwanwelisaya stupa, a massive white dome that’s seriously impressive. It does get hot here, and there’s not a ton of shade, that said, do be prepared.
Mihintale: The Cradle of Buddhism
Our final stop, yet no less important, Mihintale, that is said to be where Buddhism first came to Sri Lanka. Getting to the top involves climbing a whole lot of steps, it really does, but the panoramic views from up there are absolutely stunning, especially at sunset. There are several key spots to see, actually. Like the Ambasthala Dagoba and the Aradhana Gala (the Meditation Rock), which offer some serious reflection time. It’s just a pretty serene place, that’s the beauty of it. A serene finish to what is an action-packed day.
