Coastal Karnataka: A 3-Day Surfing Adventure Review
Have you ever thought about hanging ten on the shores of India? Coastal Karnataka might just be, like, the answer! Yeah, it’s not Bali or Hawaii, but it’s a bit of a hidden gem, with some great surf spots and that super chill Indian vibe. This review? All about what you can expect on a 3-day surfing trip there, covering spots, lessons, and those little insider tips, I guess.
Day 1: Gokarna – Waves and Beach Bliss
Gokarna? Really, really beautiful. Om Beach, especially, is known, I would say, as a calmer spot, which is super for beginners. My first morning? Started with, sort of, a lesson at a surf school right there on the beach. They walked us through the basics on the sand, so, you know, popping up, paddling, all that, which, honestly, felt a little easier than it looks!
The rest of the day? Just practicing in the water. The waves at Gokarna, they’re typically not too big, maybe around 2-3 feet, which, I feel, makes it the best learning area. In the afternoon, I explored the area, basically the town. It’s got this super relaxed vibe, great for just chilling after surfing. Ate at a local place, too; the seafood? Amazingly fresh!
Day 2: Murudeshwar – Temple Views and Consistent Swells
Next, Murudeshwar. Slightly different than Gokarna, that is, surf-wise. You can easily travel by local bus, or you can also hire a driver. This spot has that giant Shiva statue looking over everything, is that cool? Plus, the waves are usually more consistent here. You know, I spent the morning surfing near the main beach, putting my skills to work. In fact, the swell was just a little bit bigger, gave me some practice, I’d say.
After surfing, I went to explore the temple, which, really, is very stunning and also has really great views. It shows some perspective when it comes to history and culture mixed with surf is quite a combo, and yet something else! You know, the place, itself, tends to draw more of a local crowd, in some respects, making it an authentic Indian experience. Plus, again, I had fantastic seafood at a place overlooking the ocean.
Day 3: Back to Gokarna or Relaxation
For my last day, I decided to go back to Gokarna. Because I liked the place. This time, I wanted to explore some beaches other than Om. Paradise Beach and Half Moon Beach were worth the trip, I suppose! You need to take a short boat ride from Gokarna main beach, still. The surf there? Maybe not as good, I thought, yet the secluded vibe made them really worth it for swimming, chilling, basically soaking up the sun.
You know, in the afternoon, I got a relaxing Ayurvedic massage at a retreat in Gokarna. That was almost, like, the perfect way to cap off the trip. If surfing is something you want, there’s a plenty, and I felt relaxed and ready to head home.
