Chucuito Getaway: Review, Things to Do & Travel Tips

Picture this: the vast, shimmering expanse of Lake Titicaca, and, you know, right there on its shore sits this town. It’s called Chucuito, so it is. Very few tourists put it on their lists when visiting Peru, and very few books talk about it either, very surprisingly. So, to be honest, my expectations weren’t very high when I got ready to spend a day there. I hoped for a little peace and quiet, and maybe some lovely scenery. Well, Chucuito actually delivered a bunch more. It is a place that slowly gets into you, with this gentle charm that invites you to slow down and experience a more authentic side of Peru.

Getting There and Getting Around

To begin, very much like anything around Lake Titicaca, you, very much, need to start in Puno. Puno acts, in some ways, as the major transport hub. Reaching Chucuito from Puno is easy and it’s really inexpensive, it actually only costs a few soles! From the center of Puno, there are these frequent minivan services – locals, I think, just call them “colectivos”. They leave when they’re full, typically every 15-20 minutes, or so, from a couple blocks from the main bus terminal. You know, if you ask anybody for “colectivos a Chucuito”, they, for sure, point you in the correct direction.

The journey itself is, well, really short, very, very much about 20-30 minutes, and offers fantastic views of the lake and the countryside. When you get there, the colectivo usually drops passengers right off in the main plaza of Chucuito. Walking is absolutely the most enjoyable way to investigate this little spot, so too it is! Every major site is, very much, within just a short distance from the plaza, which helps you immerse yourself. If your feet start to get a little bit sore, motorcycle taxis, or “moto-taxis,” as they are, are very easily accessible, and also, fairly affordable, should you need them.

No matter its exact beginning, or its origins, Inca Uyo actually serves as a really fascinating window to the practices, the history, and, of course, the worldviews, of ancient Andean cultures.

Templo de la Asunción & Templo de Santo Domingo

Like your average traveler or travel blogger, you’re, likely, to encounter this, in this little town: very impressive, yet somewhat odd, dual-church phenomenon! What you see is two religious temples that exist alongside one another, close by the main square. Those are the Templo de la Asunción and Templo de Santo Domingo, you see, and I think you will appreciate the unique kind of charm they project! They’re, in a way, a visual lesson that, you see, history often does not make that much of a whole lot of logical sense.

The story behind this odd arrangement comes from the early colonial days, in some respects, the colonial authorities basically were struggling to fully transform the natives to Christianity, I think, and I guess, those people also didn’t totally want to abandon the gods and spiritual systems that had existed long, long before them! Although it never made too much logical sense to the new religious leaders, this split actually grew to become the identity and reality of the town. What remains today, still, is that those church buildings basically reflect a rich, even complex, story from local life at a time that it tried, you know, so desperately, to transform, but also tried to keep aspects of who it was, too!

A Window to Lake Titicaca: Overlook Point

What you might really want to do, as you investigate this area, is, of course, have some kind of amazing viewpoints, that allow you a look to this very famed location, you know, known, in Peru, as Lake Titicaca, or so it is. What I found is a viewpoint very conveniently situated up a tiny slope on the skirts of this village, and it allowed some peaceful introspection into myself, along with appreciation of one of the more majestic views I think that you could see on Earth, which are those you see surrounding Lake Titicaca, actually! What it provided for me were a couple of things, such as panoramic landscapes, you see. It also granted these great chances for gorgeous photos.
