Chongqing Wulong Day Trip Review: Is It Worth It?

Alright, if you’re thinking of escaping the Chongqing urban areas for a bit and soaking up some scenery that seems straight out of a movie (Transformers: Age of Extinction, anyone?), a day trip to Wulong Karst Geological Park might be right up your alley. I took a private day tour with several routes available, and thought I’d give you the lowdown, like your inside scoop on whether it’s really worth your time and money.

Chongqing Wulong Day Trip Review: Is It Worth It?

Why Wulong? It’s Almost Like Another Planet

First off, so why Wulong, exactly? Very simply, it’s not just another park; instead, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site boasting some seriously dramatic landscapes. We are talking deep gorges, natural bridges that’ll make your jaw drop, and caves which are just completely unreal. The Karst formations have been molded over millions of years, in some respects making it a great spot to ditch the city smog and replace it with some mind-blowing views. Very seriously, if nature’s your thing, Wulong delivers in spades. Like your own personal Jurassic Park, though, thankfully, without the dinosaurs.

Choosing Your Route: Three Bridges, Fairy Mountain, and More

Now, when it comes to planning your private day tour, you actually have a few options. The most touristy route tends to be the Three Natural Bridges (Sanqiao), and honestly, for really good reason. Seeing those colossal stone arches is definitely something you won’t forget anytime soon. It’s almost like nature tried to build cathedrals, in some respects. Very seriously, if you have limited time, this is your must-see. Then there’s Fairy Mountain (that is, when it’s not shrouded in fog) that offers more of a scenic, panoramic experience. I went during a clearer time of year, and let me tell you, the vistas were incredible. Also, there are caves which, while beautiful, might get a bit samey if you’re not a hardcore cave enthusiast. Just a little tip – check the weather before you commit, since fog can, too, ruin those mountain views completely.

What a Private Tour Gets You (Besides Peace of Mind)

Alright, why a private tour, then? Isn’t it pricey? Well, it is, of course, going to cost you a fair bit more than going by bus or trying to piece it together yourself. That being said, there are definite upsides. Your private guide should be able to communicate pretty easily (huge bonus in China, as I’m sure you know), plus they can customize the day to suit what you fancy doing and at what pace you want to do it. Basically, no rushing, no being stuck with a huge group all jostling for the same photo spot; just a relaxed day soaking it all in. I mean, to be honest, that’s why I opted for it and why I would do the same again.

Getting There and Back: It’s a Bit of a Drive

Just a little heads up – it’s quite a ride from Chongqing, nearly three to four hours each way by vehicle, generally. You will definitely be spending a significant chunk of your day just travelling. My advice is that you prepare a good playlist, download a book, or just plan to nap. Many tours will have a stop off along the way at a place that sells stuff to tourists, too, so that, in a way, you can break up the drive somewhat and stock up on snacks, too, and drinks (or just leg stretches). As I was saying, it’s all part of the adventure.

What to Bring: Be Prepared!

Another thing – you’ll want to make sure you are geared up properly. Solid shoes are actually essential; there will be a ton of walking, including on uneven ground. Bring water – it can get mighty hot and sweaty, especially hiking up and down around the bridges. A hat, sunglasses, and sunblock? Totally essential. And, depending on the season, bring rain gear as a back-up, just in case. Being prepared just makes everything a lot more comfy. Don’t forget your camera too it’s almost a given, since you are going to be snapping away like mad.

Food, Glorious Food (Or Lack Thereof)

I wouldn’t go expecting Michelin-star meals, yet. Food options in the park areas tend to be reasonably basic – that is, the typical tourist fare you get at many attractions. It will definitely fill a hole but don’t be anticipating some top-notch dining experience. A lot of private tours will include lunch at one of these places, so check what’s on offer in advance. Or pack your own picnic, and find a great viewing spot, though. Very simply, it beats eating average noodles in a packed restaurant.

Is It Really Worth the Hype? The Verdict.

At the end of the day, so is the Chongqing Wulong private day tour multiple routes a good bet? Actually, if you are prepared for the drive and you appreciate great views and nature’s marvels, yes, definitely. Having your own guide just tends to make it smoother and lets you enjoy the visit without worrying so much about transportation, lines, and translating everything. Be sure that the weather’s on your side and wear comfy shoes. After that, prepare to have your mind blown by the sheer size of those bridges and the pretty unique scenery. Just saying.
