Well, the town just oozes charm, you know? What really got me excited were those Byzantine mosaics everybody raves about, they’re so famous, I mean. So, I thought a private tour would be, well, a great way to really see them and learn something along the way. Let me share all about the tour I went on. What I’m hoping is that by the time you’re done here, you will get to see the highlights and maybe some of the low points to give you a super helpful picture. Here’s my personal review with plenty of details.

What Makes Cefalu a Must-See?

Cefalu coastline

Cefalu, now that is quite a spot on the map, right? Its history? Pretty amazing actually. You will discover layer after layer of it. You’ll want to soak up some sun, that’s almost guaranteed; the beaches there are quite wonderful. Those Byzantine mosaics are like nothing I had witnessed prior, seriously mind blowing and very worthy of attention. Plus, the town has got this medieval vibe, right, which just makes wandering around so special, it is, and worth your exploration time. Before doing a tour of any kind in Cefalu, one really should explore why this town deserves seeing, almost, and what makes it very much worthy of a space on any itinerary when trotting around Sicily.

Booking the Private Tour

Booking a tour

The tour I went with, well, it was found through an online platform, which is, just that’s how you seem to do things these days. This company really seemed, sort of, up front with what was on offer; a Byzantine mosaic tour in Cefalu. Now, I did check a few others first, you know, did the usual comparison thing, and this one seemed like the best option for me, just seemingly with the price, length and the stated itinerary. The booking? Yeah, that was all very straightforward; there weren’t too many steps, very quick and simple. You have that confirmation email come through quick too it’s almost instant so, and, I suppose, peace of mind is brought about by that alone.

Meeting the Guide

Tourist guide Sicily

Now, it is essential when partaking in a private tour to see whether you click, almost, with your guide, that it goes without saying, right? I mean it. Ours, that person was extremely knowledgeable; a fountain of historical facts to draw from. His name was Giovanni. Giovanni was very clearly local, seemingly knowing pretty much all about Cefalu’s history. At the point that he welcomed us, there at the arranged spot, everything felt good and really positive, just really giving hope for what was about to come in the proceeding hours. What’s worth mentioning is that he had really great English so that, and there was no issues at all with communications from start to finish.

Inside Cefalu Cathedral

Inside Cefalu Cathedral

Okay, the Cathedral, this is definitely where you spend, typically, most of your time on this tour, obviously as the name suggests, and inside, the Byzantine mosaics were, just I mean, incredible. Giovanni just started pointing out all the details, and sharing all this, sort of, insight about their history, all about what they represented, about who put them there in the first place, actually a whole lot about the whole place. The artistry that goes into them? Blown away does not cover that so, almost, you really appreciate them even more when someone’s there explaining things; I really would have just looked right past the important things, you see? Those colors and that gold that shimmer so it, really, almost took my breath away, quite frankly. It just might be up there with one of the best sights that I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing, you know?

Walking Through the Old Town

walking around the old town

It isn’t just all about those mosaics on this tour though it’s almost just as good walking through the Old Town too, in its own way. Giovanni just knew every little side street and was keen on showing us the really picturesque spots. There were little stories too it’s almost that those side streets seem to harbor, tales from years back, like tales you wouldn’t believe! I actually learned some quite interesting things about Cefalu’s history; it is, Giovanni made it all, kind of, fun and relatable as well. We stopped every now and again just very slightly to grab some delicious street food which I’d absolutely recommend doing so. To properly experience Cefalu, there must be a stroll taken around these parts; it is quintessential; it has that Sicilian heart.

Hidden Gems Discovered

Hidden Gems Sicily

Right, one thing I always look for on a tour? That’s that thing to do with whether I get to see something not everyone sees, you know? Well, this tour, very much it did deliver. Giovanni then just took us to this little, tiny church way up on a back street. So, it was a back street find; I never would have spotted it. And then you’ve got this crazy view, which is, like this insane panoramic view, overlooking the coastline, of which most tourists are never aware. Those little touches, that’s almost what makes a tour very memorable; it gives you things to really cherish forever, nearly. It will be in your mind every now and again that, isn’t it? It’s quite an exhilarating feeling in many respects actually!

Was It Worth the Money?

Money well spent

Okay, the biggie, right? You need to figure out if that tour’s going to break the bank and also is it worthy, actually? I will tell you honestly now that, well, it wasn’t exactly what you call a cheap option, or at least this one was slightly above the average. That being said though, what I received, the complete tour? More than justified what I paid so, for sure. The personalized attention alone, in some respects, the knowledge shared, and then getting shown those hidden gems? Pretty golden stuff, or it’s certainly like gold. Considering those average run of the mill, big group tours will set you back some change, this private tour definitely did, you know, offer more value for money.

Pros and Cons

Everything has its ups and downs right, or pros and cons. This private tour in Cefalu isn’t completely, totally different.

Pros:

  • Personalized attention to the extreme, there almost.
  • In-depth information which goes beyond Wikipedia; seriously special insights here.
  • That is almost seeing the real, proper Cefalu, not that which is only offered to the tourists.

Cons:

  • Now, more on the costly end of things; it isn’t just super cheap so, anyway that isn’t really a shock; very good tours, with super special attention and value do come at a cost, right?
  • That really did last quite a few hours which did, actually just slightly catch me off guard but that actually wasn’t the greatest issue so, no, I didn’t mind that but there could well be a need to really plan your day; allocate a good chunk.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Tour

tips for travelling

Before doing any Cefalu tour, there really needs to be some good thinking carried out to make it really shine. A little bit, slightly of thought really will take it up a notch. These are the pointers which I would strongly recommend considering.

  • There might well be a consideration given to the appropriate attire especially so as that Cathedral requests, like, covered shoulders and covered knees. Don’t be the person who gets turned away or looks slightly rude because it is important to show some respect in places like that so, okay?
  • By wearing super comfy shoes and maybe trainers, you might be doing yourself, and your feet a favor actually! There’s walking that takes place a lot! I mean plenty! Pounding the pavements is almost what this consists of and more so again, on top of that if you have a walking related ailment of any kind. So, consider carefully.
  • Okay, that almost does sound really obvious doesn’t it, but still make sure that the cameras are almost fully charged so as to avoid frustration as that would really put a dampener on your special outing, okay, and equally if it’s doable take a power bank, basically, anyway? I hope so as that will really sort you out as a top priority!
  • Always ask as that tour progresses all of the crazy questions that will inevitably creep in there are bound to be little details about which you will want to know more about, almost, so by opening that dialog, you almost start to show the tour guide what you want so anyway and it opens up discussions that were otherwise left to drift. You may even get more secrets unlocked along the way. Don’t assume that you will absorb all that is spoken about so listen hard or else make that point of requesting frequent pit stops where you can make notes of all the great nuggets of stories. You don’t want it all to get lost to the memory gods that could happen!
