Right away, it was obvious that Ms. Park had a real connection to this place. It seems her own family had been living in that area for ages, and that’s like several generations. She didn’t just point out spots, that is that she was telling stories. Each alley, each building had its own interesting history and characters attached to it. One great example: when she talked about a old well that used to be the social hangout. Or, when she was talking about it seemed the neighbors would meet up and gossip, it actually painted such a fun, lively picture of daily life there. It was way more real than just reading some facts from a guide book; Ms. Park had almost made it all incredibly alive.

Now, what makes the Bukchon tour actually interesting are definitely those winding alleys and the hanoks you’ll see along the way. I have got to say that Ms. Park very, very carefully guided us through this part, while making sure we got a really cool view of this unique architecture and we seemed to get a nice break away from what seemed like bigger crowds, too. The way a typical hanok is put together is fascinating. Did you know they almost make use of natural materials? Stuff like wood and stone – and Ms. Park was there to talk about every single bit in depth. This actually makes you appreciate these houses and the history they have seen a lot more. And also, what’s even better, you are given opportunities to peek inside of a few workshops. Here the local artisans are doing a lot of demonstrations for different traditional crafts. Very cool.

Alright, so I had never done traditional Korean arts but this very portion was arguably one of the neatest things that I got to do that entire day!
