Bologna Street Art Tour: Kick Scooters & Hidden Gems (Review)

Thinking about seeing Bologna’s street art? So, you should seriously think about doing it on an electric scooter. A walking tour? Well, it is way too slow. A bus tour? Way too isolating, in a way. I recently tried a street art tour of Bologna on an electric kick scooter, and I’m eager to share my experience – the good bits, the surprising bits, and why you might fancy it, too.

First Impressions: Scooting Through History

Bologna Historical Streets

Okay, so, Bologna. Pretty famous for its towers and food, right? But something people don’t know as much about is it also has this bubbling-under-the-surface street art scene. My tour started right near Piazza Maggiore, very in the heart of the ancient city. Getting acquainted with the scooter was straightforward – nothing complicated, really. A quick how-to from the guide, a helmet that fit pretty well, and I felt safe enough to move a bit. Zipping past buildings that have seemingly been there forever, I started feeling a sense of excitement building, is that odd? Seeing a place you’ve heard about and admired? I mean, that’s cool and everything, yet moving around like this somehow makes the experience unique.

The Art Hunt: What We Saw

Bologna Street Art Murals

What the guide showed us went further than your typical graffiti, so there were huge murals covering entire building sides. Now, these weren’t your average tags. That said, each piece really had something important to say, so you could almost feel the pulse of Bologna through them. We saw art commenting on social problems, abstract works bursting with energy, and homages to folks who’ve left their mark on the city. It was pointed out to me that artists like Blu and Eron had definitely left their influence here, that’s what the guide said, too it’s almost as if Bologna gives the world a wink and says, “There is a spot here for everyone, like your take on culture.” The way each piece brought out conversation really surprised me.

Scooter Life: Freedom on Two Wheels

Electric Scooter City Tour

The electric scooter wasn’t just a method to get around, very. You know, it totally enhanced the whole tour experience. That, and you could cover way more ground than walking allows, meaning we dove deeper into local neighborhoods and backstreets that most travelers don’t usually see. Finding a spot, parking, and taking pictures was also much easier than wrangling a bike, might I add. Plus, it just feels kinda cool to glide along silently, soaking up the environment without making a sound. Very similar to floating, in a way. This method meant we were experiencing Bologna, instead of merely observing it.

Local Life and Hidden Gems

Hidden Gems Bologna

What stuck with me wasn’t only the big murals. Rather, it was discovering how much street art is interwoven into the life of Bologna. This, in that it’s hidden away on building sides or tucked into doorways. During the tour, the guide brought out anecdotes about the artists, very and often about the meaning behind the art. He told of how some pieces became the point of some pretty interesting local debates. We swung by community gardens that had sprung up in vacant lots, saw socially conscious art projects breathing fresh life into abandoned buildings, very unexpected, to be honest. Seems that seeing all this, is the point when it felt much less like just observing art and very more like experiencing the city’s beating heart.

Why You Should Give it a Go

Bologna Travel Experience

Would I suggest a Bologna street art tour on an electric kick scooter? Absolutely! It hands-down offers something more special than your average guided experience, is that strange? Getting around on a scooter changes the feel. And if you love photography, the kick scooter really becomes this really handy mobile platform, is that an exaggeration? The guides seem really knowledgable and stoked to bring out the culture here to the travelers. You gain insight to spots that tourists don’t typically see. What surprised me was the electric scooter, because this is just this very convenient method, and that it actually provides an experience of its own. It’s definitely worth the investment, particularly if you’re seeking a more unique, authentic slice of Bologna.

Basically, if you are open to learning Bologna through its less well-known art scene, then that is cool, then consider doing this tour. What is uncovered here, shows insight you wouldn’t gain walking on foot.
