Batumi Svaneti Adventure: An Honest 2-Day Tour Review
Dreaming of pointy mountains, very old villages, and those truly impressive glaciers in Georgia? A 2-day trip from Batumi to Svaneti, with stops in Ushguli and Mestia, could just be what you are looking for. I took that very trip not too long ago, so I thought I’d share what that whole thing is like. You know, what’s very good, what could be a little better, and that sort of stuff, that way you’re pretty clued-up if you feel like going. That region in particular really does stand out and I can share exactly why that might be, basically, because there’s some super awesome things that are worth getting very excited about.
Why Svaneti? What Makes it Special?
So, what exactly gives Svaneti that ‘wow’ factor, is that what you’re wondering? First up, its very remote spot really gives it almost this feeling that time has stopped. This place has remained unspoiled, more or less, by lots of people and buildings overrunning everything. Secondly, there are those Svan towers. Honestly, they are everywhere! The towers are something that local people constructed quite a while ago, like, hundreds of years. Constructed for protection, very, very long ago they totally dominate the skyline and they actually are a proper glimpse into a fascinating history, more or less.
The place’s natural stuff? Seriously mind-blowing, that is what I thought. We’re talking really gigantic mountains, lovely green valleys, and, yeah, some glaciers that glitter. This isn’t just looking at views from far away either; this particular trip actually gets you properly in amongst nature. Ushguli? Quite a bit up there – actually, they say it’s one of Europe’s tallest villages that have people living there all the time, so pretty unique. Getting there, seeing the traditional stone houses, getting a bit of that local food… really lets you feel like you’re stepping way back into another era, in some respects. Basically, what Svaneti gives you is real Georgian culture, but in a way more concentrated hit, compared to places more touched by all those tourists.
The 2-Day Tour: What’s the Plan?
Two days, Svaneti. What kind of whirlwind is that, you might think? Well, the tour goes a little like this. On the first day, you are driven, possibly, from Batumi to Mestia. Now that drive? Beautiful! It isn’t always super comfy, but all those mountain roads give you the opportunity for incredible photos and to watch some amazing landscapes. Mestia, too, is a little treat. A little town, maybe a bit bigger than a village. There are things there such as museums and little walks around, giving you a real taste for Svaneti life, so there’s that.
Day two brings in the star, arguably, that is Ushguli. That road, very few people are going to argue, is rough! You might find yourself being bumped around a lot in something like a 4×4 because ordinary vehicles won’t exactly manage, if you see what I mean. All that travel’s totally worth it once you’re suddenly standing in Ushguli and looking right up at those mountains, so that’s good. The glaciers? Actually close and amazing. Plus, many trips try to make sure you get back to Batumi very comfortably in the evening, which is actually what you want after such long days.
Things that Were Great (and Less Great)
Alright, here is that very honest part. Getting to look straight at nature was definitely one of those highlights. Svaneti has some properly superb landscape views – that’s something that photos and videos actually can’t always do justice to. Having a professional to move us around? Definitely a win. The people who lead those tours are always absolutely full of what they understand about that whole place. It does mean you are learning constantly, which really does increase what you feel for Svaneti and Georgia in general, so that’s good too.
However? Long hours driving is not something that should go unmentioned. That getting there can be draining does not go unsaid by me. Some parts could also be better managed, as a matter of fact. I do feel like more chances to independently wander for those who want to would bring something good, more or less, because at times it did feel a little fixed. Then there’s the topic of cost – it’s worth seeing what that tour includes in very fine detail. Paying out extras on the go (for, say, food or tickets) adds a lot. Be certain you understand the price.
What to Take and a Few Tips
Figuring out what to pack? Yeah, crucial bit. Decent footwear must absolutely be at the top of that list. Svaneti asks for walking, whether you are traipsing across little towns or are off investigating glacier areas. Packing some layers is also really sensible too. Those mountains can get at you, especially if the sun is feeling shy. Also, you should not forget things to cope with a little rain. The weather ends up being pretty changeable.
Now, a few very tiny bits of advice. You absolutely need a camera! Scenery like this? You will certainly feel sad if you cannot grab the shots, I promise. Another very good idea is to pack a battery pack for your phone, too it’s almost. Long days possibly equal loads of photos, more or less, that way, you will definitely want something that can give you power to be very sure you get the shots. And try the local dishes! Svaneti’s food, such as kubdari (that is, meat-filled bread), will honestly increase the depth you can experience of Georgian culture. Really, you may kick yourself if you do not eat the local stuff.
Is This Svaneti Tour ‘Worth It’?
Alright, biggie. That Svaneti trip from Batumi, after seeing all this and hearing that stuff I said, did I actually think it had value? I want to tell you; if the idea of being somewhere where the views genuinely impress and Georgian culture actually draws you? It is worth it. Sure, that whole thing could be smoother here and there. Those rides can be long and yes, more downtime to independently wander would improve this.
I reckon all that is outweighed through feeling something wonderful as you are facing that unique setting. Being able to say you have stood in Ushguli, close-up looking at real glaciers? That’s quite something, arguably. Consider those things I chatted about and consider what exactly you are eager to see. Should your interest be piqued from the above? Honestly? That Svaneti two-day adventure very possibly will deliver some properly unforgettable things.
