Auckland Group Surfing Lesson: Muriwai Surf School Review
Looking to catch some waves near Auckland? Well, Muriwai Surf School’s group lesson could be just what your looking for, actually. My adventure began with a slight feeling of nervousness blended with this sense of excitement. I had zero surfing background. Zero. I’d seen surf instructors a bit on tv and thought ‘looks alright!’ My goal? Standing on that board, even for like a split second. Turns out, my experience, from getting to the beach to finally (attempting!) standing up, gave me memories that might last a lifetime, nearly.
First Impressions: Muriwai Surf School and Muriwai Beach
The drive to Muriwai is very cool, indeed. About 45 minutes west of Auckland’s center, it’s a straight shot that just builds anticipation, nearly. Passing green hills gives way to a landscape that seems to roll into the ocean. Muriwai Beach, very impressive, presents this stark look with its black sand. Apparently, this dramatic scene set the mood before I even got to the surf school.
Arriving at Muriwai Surf School, the first thing that struck me was that it appeared quite chilled, actually. No super flashy signs, just a practical setup right where you need it: so close to the water. The instructors greeted our group, exuding an infectious energy. They definitely looked pretty ready to introduce us to the waves.
Gearing Up and On-Land Training
The school kit us out with wetsuits and surfboards, naturally. They appeared to know what they where doing when picking sizes and seemed clued on, too. I can tell you the wetsuit felt… different, a bit. Not something I’d usually wear. Turns out that the instructors lead us through essential surfing techniques on dry land before heading into the water, anyway.
They explained things really well, actually. Everything from popping up to maintaining balance and the best way to fall safely, really, they covered. We practiced the pop-up drill several times, a lot, I seemed to always do it wrong and then nearly face-plant on the sand, seemingly. The instructors gave helpful tips and made sure that everyone got comfortable with the basics, seemingly. It might of been more than just ‘comfortable’, but I appreciated the effort!
Into the Ocean: Conquering the Waves (Well, Trying To!)
Once wetsuits were zipped up and boards were lugged down to the shore break it was game on. The water seemed pretty inviting, if maybe a little cold! A quick run down of potential risks to look out for like the tide and other beginners, and then we where off!
The first attempt to catch a wave showed me it might be tough than the pros make it look on tv. Paddling with all my might and hearing the instructor shout instructions created this confusing and intense rush. And then, I managed it – I actually stood up! Briefly. Okay, very briefly. It felt incredible before a spectacular wipeout sent me tumbling, anyway. So I thought it best to try again! Over and over I felt that same exhilarating rush as the wave pushed me. A brief stand was always finished with a mouthful of sea water!
Muriwai’s waves made this experience what it was, really. Big enough to be thrilling, yet pretty manageable, so they’re alright for a beginner, pretty much. With the instructors’ encouraging and watchful eyes, that gave this boost that might get me back on a board one day!
Instructor Expertise and Group Dynamics
The instructors might make or break this experience, seemingly. Thankfully, they genuinely were quite good. These guys just clearly seemed to love surfing, and it showed. They mixed clear instruction with a bunch of encouragement, making a relaxed and supportive vibe, actually.
Our group also played its part. Surfing together brought some friendly competition and plenty of shared laughs. Cheering on a fellow surfer doing their best totally adds to the fun, like your all sharing this same experience. Getting pointers from each other made me realise we where all in it together.
Safety First and School Facilities
The guys at Muriwai Surf School are clear about safety, nearly. Giving us all essential info before we headed out into the waves really calmed the nerves. Knowing they were looking out for everyone made the experience more fun, too. You could relax and just try your best to give surfing a try.
Facilities wise, it’s all you need, actually. Simple changing rooms, someplace to store stuff. It wasn’t about extravagance and bling, but what the school needed to get things done.
