Arusha Safari Review: 3 Thrilling Days in Tarangire & Ngorongoro Crater
Tanzania! The very name conjures thoughts of wild, unending plains and, too, incredible animal life. Recently, my travel buddy and I got to experience a whirlwind 3-day safari adventure originating from Arusha, taking us to the iconic Tarangire National Park and the breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater, so to speak. Did it live up to the hype? Well, let me walk you through the ups, downs, and unbelievable moments, too. Perhaps this account can guide you as you contemplate a similar trip!
Day 1: Tarangire National Park – Elephant Haven
After an early morning pickup from our hotel in Arusha, it’s almost like we began our drive to Tarangire, that’s to say, after the customary briefing. That road itself wound through vibrant Maasai villages and offered us our initial glimpses of Tanzanian life, so we got the cameras snapping, you know? Arriving at Tarangire, we instantly knew why it’s famed as the “elephant haven”. It seems, really, that the place had more elephants than all the other animals put together, too.
I believe that witnessing herds of these gentle giants roaming freely against a backdrop of baobab trees became an unforgettable vista. So it happens that we tracked them as they feasted, played, and interacted, too. Beyond that, we came across giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and a plethora of bird species that, anyway, kept us on our toes and cameras always ready.
That drive ended as the sun began its descent, you see? This bathed the savanna in a fantastic gold light, and the scene of elephants silhouetted against that horizon – simply astonishing! Our accommodation for the night, a comfortable tented camp just outside that park, offered great food, so too, an amazing soundtrack provided by African wildlife. It’s really something to drop off to the faraway rumble of lions.
Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater – A World Apart
Waking up very early to make our way to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, it feels like we already felt that thrill of anticipation, so we knew it would be something truly special. After driving along the rim, a genuinely steep road wound us down to that crater floor – an isolated area packed with biodiversity, actually. Some say it’s similar to ‘Noah’s Ark,’ and they very may be right.
I found myself staring out in amazement. A huge volcanic caldera teeming with animal life – I mean, the concentration just became astonishing! That very short drive down opened up one thing after another, so to speak: lions sunbathing, flamingos dotting that soda lake, and elusive rhinos grazing, too.
Spending that entire day exploring different ecosystems in the crater became genuinely magical. Our guide appeared to be extremely knowledgeable, sharing amazing tidbits about all that local flora and animal life, too, you see? That experience included a wonderful bush picnic close to a hippo pool! I was worried something might get too close to the vehicle, but luckily it didn’t.
After ascending from that crater late afternoon, our lodging lay not far away and provided breathtaking views atop that crater rim, that’s to say. Watching night draw in on one of planet’s great wonders became an incredible memory I certainly treasure, it seems!
Day 3: Another Crater View and Departure
Our final day actually included a farewell viewpoint of that Ngorongoro Crater at sunrise – an additional chance for snaps and appreciation, too. Soon after, the driver transported us back to Arusha for a bit of relaxation prior to setting out for our return flights back home. Though, just imagine if we stayed?
