Arequipa’s Misti Volcano: My 2-Day Excursion Review

So, you’re thinking of hiking Misti Volcano near Arequipa, Peru? It’s almost a great thought! It can be quite an experience, that’s for certain. Misti, it seems, dominates the Arequipa skyline, a snow-capped volcano that’s pretty hard to ignore. Getting to the top is pretty tough, but oh so rewarding, like a proper challenge if that makes any sense.

Why Misti? My Call to the Heights

Now, I’m definitely no pro climber, so you know. Yet, I really felt this pull towards Misti, kind of hard to explain, right? After wandering around Arequipa’s stunning baroque buildings and eating my fill of rocoto relleno (stuffed peppers—yum!), I craved something really different. Misti it was, the big fella called to me, almost. It promised some remarkable views, a solid workout, and this story, the kind you remember forever.

Choosing the right Tour Company: What to watch out for.

Okay, first thing’s first: going solo on Misti really isn’t the best idea, just saying. You need a reputable tour operator, someone who really knows their stuff. Loads of agencies around Arequipa promise you the summit, so they do, yet not all of them are, in some respects, created equal. Things to watch? Certified guides who can handle any issues, and decent equipment, that matters heaps, alright? Check if they provide plastic hiking boots as it gets really cold at night and on summit day at around 5,822m (19,101 ft), something many hikers don’t even consider, almost. I checked out a few places, chatted to some past climbers, and then picked one that, to be honest, seemed pretty professional. Prices will be slightly different, that’s fairly standard.

Day 1: Base Camp Bound

Day one? Well, that was a bit of a slog, admittedly. The ride from Arequipa heads up to the base of the volcano is a bit bumpy, pretty wild actually, then it’s pretty much straight uphill. The terrain changes quickly. We went from dry desert slopes to this volcanic ash that, truth be told, felt like walking on the moon. Pretty strange. We were slow, but sure, you know. Getting used to the altitude felt like an absolute must! Breathing became something of an effort, actually! But with amazing views, it didn’t hurt to just take it slow.

At base camp (around 4,800m), we got the tents set up, boiled some water, and then ate something of a basic meal. Seriously, don’t expect restaurant grub up there; it’s all about fuel. Then the sun set and it suddenly got cold, very very cold! Layers, so they’re important. That night’s sleep wasn’t really much sleep, what with the cold and nerves and stuff. Yet, hey, that’s adventure!

Day 2: Summit Push and Back Down

Okay, this day really tested everything, alright. Up at like, 1 am, or something ridiculous. The whole team geared up with headlamps and crampons and ice axes – suddenly things felt rather serious, I must say. The first bit involved a climb up some rocky terrain, more or less straightforward but tricky with heavy boots and tiredness.

And then we hit the glacier. Walking with crampons felt awkward at first, very. Then it’s all about trusting your feet. This section, that was, arguably, beautiful and terrifying all at the same time, alright. The stars shone, and you could see the lights of Arequipa below – unbelievable view. That said, the wind howled and the summit looked seriously distant.

The final climb? Brutal, basically. Steep, icy, thin air… it felt like every step needed some supreme effort, totally. But, bit by bit, the crater appeared. And finally? Reaching the summit? What a buzz, almost indescribable. Pictures don’t capture it, basically. You feel above everything, so small in such a gigantic space. A short break for photos, smiles all round, and high fives, then it’s time to go down. Coming down is faster but no easier on your knees, really not. Back at base camp we packed up and then hiked all the way back down to where the 4×4 was waiting.
