Antalya Ancient City Tour Review: Perge, Aspendos & Side
If you’re anything like me, you’re drawn to destinations with rich histories and awe-inspiring ruins, places that can take you to a different period, places with stories etched in stone and whispers carried on the Mediterranean breeze, that’s almost an irresistible invitation. So, when the chance to explore Perge, Aspendos, and Side, some of Antalya’s most remarkable ancient cities came up, I jumped at it, too. I’m going to share my experiences, not only to give you a feel of what this kind of day trip involves, but also to give you some helpful insights to perhaps make the most of your own planned travels.
Why Choose a Private Tour, very really?
Now, there are group tours, you see them advertised pretty much all the time, yet opting for a private tour offered, arguably, a far more personalized experience. From the very beginning, having a private guide provided a level of flexibility and individual attention that made the day uniquely satisfying. Instead of being herded along with a large group, we had the chance to set our own speed, focus on things that particularly interested us, and ask as many questions as we could possibly think of without feeling like we were holding everyone back. The convenience began as soon as we were picked up directly from our Antalya hotel, in fact. Our guide, whose name was Deniz, was waiting, you see, ready to greet us with a warm smile. The transport was not only comfy, but also equipped with cold drinks – which, honestly, were much appreciated in the Antalya heat, very! Deniz proved to be, too, more than just a driver; he was a fountain of information, a teller of tales, and a genuinely personable host. As we moved from one ancient site to another, Deniz shared engaging stories, ancient history, too, bringing the ruins to life with his extensive knowledge. The personal touch, where he addressed all our questions with noticeable enthusiasm, definitely made this particular excursion really feel special.
Perge: A Walk Through History
Perge was the first destination, of course, and what a start to the day it was. Even though partially in ruins, the scale and structural layout of the city made me think, actually. Deniz explained, you know, pointing out key structures and describing what life would have been like in Perge during its heyday. I was truly struck by the stadium’s well-kept remains. To think that chariot races and different competitive games happened here centuries ago gave me a tangible link to the past. It almost makes me feel as if i was standing where many great people once stood, you know. The Hellenistic Gate, where there’s still sections that have actually lasted through the times, that are absolutely magnificent, they definitely made me realize the importance of historical preservation.
Then, there was the agora, Perge’s bustling commercial center. This once active place has worn stone pathways that whisper about vendors haggling, public figures speaking, and people generally milling about on a daily basis. The baths, while incomplete, display sophisticated engineering from ancient civilizations, featuring complex heating that still makes my mind boggle. Perge felt, in some respects, less swamped than some other historical destinations, that gives a greater opportunity to investigate at your own rate. We lingered, wandering amongst the ruins, taking photos, that’s memories to keep forever and enjoying the sense of peace there. Honestly, it’s very great just soaking up all of this beauty.
Aspendos: Marveling at the Ancient Theater
Next on the plan was Aspendos, well-known particularly for its astonishingly well-preserved ancient theater. Honestly, as we came closer to the theater, its impressive grandeur began to truly unfold. The theater, you see, is said to seat approximately 12,000 spectators and is still in impressive condition, it’s so grand, really. As I climbed up to the top rows, I actually imagined what it would’ve been like to watch a play, like your regular gladiator contests, there. The acoustics are almost so amazing that you can actually still hear a pin drop on the stage, a great performance to be seen by all!
Deniz told a few intriguing stories regarding Aspendos, also one including the theater’s original construction. As the legend goes, that’s the construction where two talented designers contended to win the hand of the local king’s daughter in marriage. The king was so impressed by both their efforts that he found it really difficult to select a winner, almost, that meant he needed a compromise. The solution became so obvious, he would have had to split the daughter right in two if he was still undecided! That almost prompted a creative approach: the designer of the theater made a modification that let the king see him at any time, whatever the king was doing. Aspendos, more or less, is much more than its theater, you know. It gives a wonderful peek into the innovative nature and creative stories of ancient times.
Side: Seaside History
Side was our last destination and provided an unique mix of ancient history and ocean appeal, you know, nearly wrapping up our historical excursion on a high note. That ancient city has, actually, a fascinating story with its old buildings set along a spectacular coastline. We wandered through Side’s winding roads, you see, visiting different shops and looking at, obviously, local crafts.
Side’s Temple of Apollo stands dramatically by the sea, yet, offering amazing photo opportunities. The remaining columns provide a poignant background to the Mediterranean waves, too, producing a visual masterpiece. It was so fascinating to learn how Side moved over time, getting a well-known trading center due to its ideal location. The synthesis of ancient buildings and the allure of a seaside town provide Site an unique, actually compelling charm, you know. The ancient city provides such visual pleasures for everybody and anyone.
Food Experiences and Local Flavors
Our private tour wasn’t, arguably, only about the historical sites; it also included local cooking experiences. Deniz took us to a great, what feels like, little local restaurant, that gives, basically, proper Turkish meals. That delicious meal actually gave me an amazing feeling and idea for what Turkish culture is, basically.

This truly had made the trip complete.
Photographing Ancient Wonders
For someone into photography, the day provided never ending chances to seize beautiful shots, literally everywhere you turn. That golden light during early morning was excellent when seizing photos of Perge. That Theater in Aspendos needs that extra photography time, actually to capture those little fine detail in its grand stand. The light, it, can bring great joy to a image when it is placed onto ancient constructions such as they. So remember if you intend on grabbing a image, is to just capture any sort of angle you see appropriate!
It’s really very wonderful to actually see different colors and structures put next to each other, that it almost gives you a real authentic vibe. But if you want to explore Side during sunset is pretty fantastic also, or even if you want to seize Side images at night is very worth the late wait too. Don’t shy, it’s almost the time when Side really shined bright, very bright that it really does makes you want to picture images!

If you ever do decide to plan a private tour, which I strongly urge you to do, you may, arguably, want to keep some things in mind to genuinely optimize your stay, nearly giving a better travel experience:
- Wear very comfy shoes: There is probably lots of walking and uneven levels when visiting each one of these ancient sites. You definitely want a comfy pair on!
- Get Sun Safe Protection: Antalya actually can have extremely hot sunshine weather, pretty extreme weather to that, so sunscreen is definitely an advantage. Do not forget a sun-hat!
