Almaty & City of Nomads Tour Review: Is It Worth It?

Kazakhstan, you know, it’s a country that very often flies under the radar, that is until you start looking at what it offers travelers. You may find that, so, it’s not just steppes (huge grasslands!) and, also, you’re getting a peek at a very interesting blend of culture and, arguably, history. I found myself in Almaty a few months back and, frankly, decided to check out one of those popular tours covering the Tamgaly Tas petroglyphs and a place known as “City of Nomads.” I would say that my experience, very much, had some really interesting highs and a couple of points that, seemingly, could be improved. Here, you’ll see I’m going to break it all down, to make it a bit simpler to tell if this type of excursion might just be for you. Basically, this should help if you’re pondering a visit! So, get cozy and let’s talk about what makes this tour shine… and where it might, well, maybe not shine quite as bright.

First Impressions: Picking Up the Pieces

Almaty city center

Alright, so, it began in Almaty. And right away I spotted one slight wrinkle; like, pickup wasn’t super well marked, that is, not really what one dreams of after, say, an overnight flight! It seemed things could’ve kicked off with, possibly, a little better guidance regarding where to gather. Very much a minor thing, but just something to be aware of. The tour van was, honestly, comfy, yet, so, things felt just a touch disorganized right as things started. As a matter of fact, pretty quickly that all faded as, maybe, our guide started giving some insights into Almaty and Kazakhstan in general. And right away it gave things more, perhaps, depth.

Tamgaly Tas: A Look at Ancient Stories

Tamgaly Tas petroglyphs

Okay, let’s get to Tamgaly Tas! And by the way, that alone might be worth the trip, just actually being able to get there. Now, those petroglyphs… oh, wow, seriously. They tell stories that apparently are from ages ago that seem to be carved right into the cliff faces. This spot, arguably, it has an energy that just sort of, well, hits you. Maybe you could tell that Buddhist images sit beside older Turkic writings, and maybe that hits home that, maybe, it’s Kazakhstan representing this crazy crossroad of cultures and religions. I found it a bit moving. As I was saying, our guide (I believe her name was Aigerim), she was very educated on the history. And, frankly, you might like this because it made it feel far less like looking at a rock, and way more like paging through, perhaps, some ancient photo album. This place is special; no doubt.

City of Nomads: Almost a Step Back In Time

City of Nomads Kazakhstan

So, right after soaking up the petroglyphs, things moved on, that is, the trip switched gears pretty sharply to the “City of Nomads,” also known, arguably, as a film set that aims to display what old Kazakh life used to look like. In a way, alright, it might seem a tiny bit touristy—because, perhaps, it is? Still, you can also see this: how they built it all and what they tried to re-make here; you’ll be seeing the craftsmanship on show. I really did start, you know, picturing nomadic life and getting a slight sense of the culture; I, really, got that this was more than seeing some fake buildings! If you are keen to actually see and feel some history then, certainly, this might fill some gaps that you have when reading. What you may get to see and get out of this place is very impressive, right? That said, what they tried to capture maybe fell short and things needed more ‘oomph’ for it to all really land perfectly. It’s good, don’t misunderstand. Possibly not something someone is, definitely, going to rate five stars on, if, just, being totally real.

Food & Those Extra Bits

Kazakhstan cuisine

Food-wise? It was a pretty authentic lunch and, as a matter of fact, one of those times when it felt good getting something truly local and, anyway, not targeted at tourists. Arguably, they had options so that almost anybody might discover something good there. Getting to sit together, it’s almost, as important since you hear stories and ideas from other folk from across the world. By the way, always one of my favorite bits when one does a tour like that, alright, it’s meeting folk! Other stuff I guess that you should note: The tour ran at what I’d say was a nice, comfy speed; anyway, at no time did anyone feel too pressured to run around madly, in my estimation. What is good is that the team has clearly built something aimed at older people. So, good points on them for not forcing anyone to jog. The weather… ah ha… Kazakhstan’s weather; well just see a range in just one day! Anyway be set for anything, ok?

Would I Tell My Friends to Take This Tour? A Little Recap.

Kazakhstan mountains

Okay, after all of it: you could ask ‘was the day worthwhile?’. So, mostly my response could well be yes. Yet with just a small number of “if’s”. Assuming seeing those Tamgaly Tas stones calls out to you or perhaps, just maybe, your Kazakhstan info seems thin; then you should go! You can definitely sense what those early people felt. It all does depend what you hope to get; “City of Nomads” is what it is, don’t get upset thinking it is super truthful! That team; those that operate it—really, they can help it seem better in how they work it, they certainly know facts. Maybe go in prepared with a couple questions of your own? Possibly go find details to explore? Therefore; doing that might change things and improve this site as a day’s sight. I believe this day worked out well; a tiny hiccup at first but, ultimately, fun memories made along the path.
