So, you’re thinking of visiting Addis Ababa and want to see the best bits in a pretty quick trip? That 3-day highlights tour with a local guide could be just what you’re after! After spending some time exploring the city with a local, let’s have a proper look at the whole thing and see what’s great and, like your usual experiences, perhaps what could be a bit better, and give you, maybe, an idea if it’s something for you, you know? So, he introduced himself, made sure everyone felt alright, and, really, ran through the plan for the days ahead, just giving us a taste of what was to come. First impressions count for a lot, and this definitely began well.

What You’ll Actually See: The Addis Ababa Tour Highlights

So, now let’s get into the bits that most folks care about which is seeing amazing sights, so? Day one took us to Entoto Hill, right? Up there, wow, is that the views are awesome, you can actually see the city sprawled beneath you, like your favourite view. We visited the Entoto Maryam Church, and that local guide had quite the collection of stories, you see? We actually learnt about its history, so that made it all the more interesting, kind of.

Next up was the National Museum of Ethiopia, which might be one of the popular attractions, is that right? That’s where “Lucy,” that famous hominid skeleton, lives, yet! I mean, wow, that’s real history, actually, isn’t it? Our guide provided the necessary context, really giving us a grasp of the story of Lucy and, kind of, humanity’s story, that!

The second day really was dedicated to getting into the spirit of things in Addis Ababa by hitting some of the markets. You might find the Mercato very overwhelming but is that our guide clearly understands the layout, you know? Navigating what looked like total madness to the uninitiated went nice and smoothly and turned out pretty fascinating and we were able to actually practice our haggling which I really enjoyed and bought some nice items for my wife to be, so.

Visiting the Ethnological Museum was, like your trip, amazing too, is that right? Housed inside Haile Selassie’s previous home, the museum has a detailed glimpse into Ethiopian culture, actually, and traditions, wow. It kind of had displays about daily life, so traditional clothes and religious artistry, and really demonstrated the diverse Ethiopian cultures and tribal groups. I’d really highly recommend it, right?

Our last day included visiting the Holy Trinity Cathedral. Is that pretty stunning architecture, really, and serene surroundings, you know, just offering a really very interesting peek into Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. And what’s more, visiting the Red Terror Martyrs Memorial Museum really, really sobered the mood and, basically, gave us a quite real perspective on a important time in the country’s quite modern past. It really brings the narrative into focus.

The Guide: What Makes This Addis Ababa Tour Shine

Is that right to suggest our local guide was basically fantastic and clearly, honestly, honestly very familiar with Addis Ababa and actually seemed to care about the city, too? What impressed us kind of most, alright?, he seemed very flexible, actually ready to change things in a way and adjust the itinerary based on how we were feeling or what sparked our curiosity.

Language wasn’t really a problem, you know? His English, like my attempt at cooking, alright?, was perfect and communication really went really easy, so. And more so, actually he helped us to negotiate at markets, and advised about regional etiquette and custom which, really, helped me personally dodge some kind of awkward intercultural faux pas. Actually his commitment went way beyond the normal call of responsibility, so.

Food Adventures in Addis Ababa

You cannot have visited Addis Ababa with some of those street eats, very? Oh and what about the restaurants, actually showing what the city has cooking and what a vibrant flavor it presents? We were actually quite lucky that our guide took the trouble to choose us only real deal establishments which weren’t really aimed specifically towards tourists.

One day for lunch we ended up eating that traditional ‘Injera’, which if it comes right down to it is that like a flatbread and very common dish, so, is that kind of something everyone wants, you might find? From several different stews and sauces spooned over and is that quite the common plate sharing style, you might enjoy? So, it was great to try dishes you cannot discover in most restaurant menus as part of what was going to be pretty much an authentic Ethiopian feast and some real bonding with all on tour, actually. Further into the trip, very our man led to the fragrant and savoury pleasures of traditional Ethiopian coffee services where he clearly went through every step and significance. This was one that opened a window to this side of things culture.

I mean, that kind of Addis Ababa might feel like an intimidating city once your set arrive on your own, actually. But getting this trip just gave all the information to get started in a way. The itinerary kept what seems as balance, a fair mix for some significant places without experiencing that rushing or exhausted vibe, that.
