A Review of Stand Up Paddle Course on the Slovenian Coast

If you have looked into trying something new, stand up paddleboarding, that’s SUP, along the Slovenian Coast might be just the thing. I recently had the chance, very accidentally actually, to join a SUP course there, and I want to share, more or less, how it went. It turned out, anyway, that Slovenia, with its beautiful, compact coastline, gives a fantastic place to start exploring this water sport. From what I experienced, you know, the combination of clear waters, calm bays, too it’s almost a pretty good climate creates great conditions both for beginners and more practiced paddlers.

What to Expect From a SUP Course

Stand Up Paddle Course

Usually, so a stand up paddle course, in Slovenia like your experience here or elsewhere, would cover some ground in stages. I mean, starting right away from shore safety and the proper way to handle the equipment is the name of the game, after all, right? The first part, as I can say, concentrates mostly, too it’s almost about getting you comfortable with balancing on the board, that is, while stationary, of course. We spent, in some respects, a surprising amount of time just kneeling, yet sometimes paddling in circles to get a bit used to how the board felt. I wasn’t so sure how necessary it felt back then, anyway, however with time and once you actually dare stand, the significance gets clearer.

Next comes the proper paddling technique, so that’s how to use your core rather than just your arms, right. This really makes a huge difference for endurance, by the way. Turns, such as the sweep turn and pivot turn, that seemed tricky, were included, yet they’re important, that, in maneuvering in smaller areas and that stuff. What’s helpful in this stage, anyway, is the instructors generally know local conditions, more or less, and tailor, in a way, their lessons to match these circumstances.

Choosing the Correct SUP Course

SUP Course Selection

Looking, possibly, into a SUP course? Just a bit things you might consider will help you discover a really appropriate one. It makes sense, though, to check the instructor’s certifications, which, basically, ensures that, you know, you’re getting good advice. Just how long they’ve been teaching matters, similarly to any sport. Do their students enjoy it? Are people recommending the course? I’d probably listen to them, to be honest. Next, of course, small group sizes generally provide more attention. We had like your instructor only handling maybe six or seven people; this can actually assist to refine your skill development faster.

For me, anyway, the location proved a thing too, basically. Courses that launch, alright, from sheltered bays often give, you know, calmer waters. This makes a giant difference at the beginning when you’re still getting the grasp of balancing. I picked a school specifically, by the way, for its quiet cove – less wind, as a matter of fact, fewer boats creating wakes, right. The schedule also influenced my choice. Did they offer several times through the day? Can I attend at a time after, you know, I’ve already settled in from the journey?

My Experience on the Slovenian Coast

SUP Experience Slovenia

I chose, so to speak, Izola for my SUP experience along the Slovenian coast. Even in the summertime, really the mornings usually offered, well, almost the calmest waters, so naturally that’s why I selected for a very first session, okay? As anyone could have guessed, putting the paddle in correctly to propel myself forward, for example, felt a little awkward. Though once standing up and gliding, almost, along the bay gave me an incredible sense, sort of, of peacefulness, if I can even articulate myself.

The course instructed that, like your movements needed to come more of the core. I could, really, sense the difference when focusing. Just the little wind came up some hours in the morning which made things a bit more difficult to deal with. Actually, after a few unintentional swims, you start to understand how valuable, I think, the initial balance drills were! It is not just balance anyway but how to regain and react. Also it’s almost, because I hadn’t really known it, being on the water offers this unbelievable vantage point, just seeing the coastline and the town in a different view, just completely transforming your idea of this setting.

Safety Measures and What to Wear

SUP Safety Gear

Safety definitely gets mentioned rather a lot throughout a SUP course. So always make sure you wear a life vest – regardless of your ability to swim. We had someone pretty strong actually and the vest felt, right, extremely reassuring. In some respects, the instructor explained the importance of knowing local weather conditions, as well, and currents. Especially, just pay attention to changing winds; what’s mild at the beach might actually quickly become a problem out at sea.

Regarding what you wear, so choose gear suitable for possible immersion, right. Something like your quick-drying clothing proves suitable for comfort. When it’s a cooler day, perhaps you could use a wetsuit is definitely an asset to help you stay warm during lessons, I would suggest. Also, arguably you will wish to apply sunscreen. Sunglasses also. As far as footwear – a lot of prefer paddling barefooted. Very maybe just wear water shoes if you find yourself uncomfortable.

Benefits of Taking a SUP Course

Benefits of SUP

I suggest that if you just approach the Slovenian Coast, try Stand Up Paddling. Just because getting proper instructions gives quite a lot benefits! Firstly, with safety in mind, a professional guides you for local conditions, similarly to areas which can become dangerous or ones that you should steer clear of for ecological causes. That sort of information can be critical, really.

For instance, a guided session actually allows you to improve proper posture from the beginning. I believe preventing developing any muscle strain later allows one to feel great benefits from the physical exercises and you want to know that’s definitely worth it. More specifically, many courses frequently offer local tours that would only be seen while over water. A unique scenic prospective is amazing! Just don’t rule out of it.
