Amsterdam Van Gogh Museum: Is the Guided Tour Worth It?

Visiting Amsterdam, too it’s almost a crime not to see the Van Gogh Museum. very, very few artists, you know, kinda hold such a special place in art history and in the hearts of so many people like Vincent van Gogh does. It is that simple. I mean, to be there, standing in front of his paintings, you’re like really seeing something. However, you know, kinda making the most of your visit? That’s, I mean, that’s the question, right? You have a choice of getting just a normal entrance ticket, or, I mean, going all in on a guided tour. so, Is the guided tour actually worth it? That’s what we’re looking at today.

Getting In: Tickets and Entry

Okay, first things first, let’s just talk about actually getting inside. Even if you decide not to go on a guided tour, is that you still have to get a ticket. And, that you absolutely, totally, utterly need to book in advance! so, Seriously, don’t just show up thinking you’re getting in. It won’t happen that way, in the same way that the tulips in the gardens wouldn’t bloom without water. Pre-booking is definitely what everyone does. you need a timed entry slot, and that’s that. It can save a ton of heartache, just like booking in advance for anything super popular, which is definitely what this is. so, You will receive an email after booking your time, you’ll scan a barcode to get in and it is recommended to arrive around 15 minutes before the allocated time slot.

There is very much a range of ticket options out there. There’s just your regular admission ticket, which will give access to the museum, where you will be left to wander and explore at your own pace. However, there is also the official guided tour ticket to explore. I want to talk about my thoughts on the two and discuss which I would recommend in various scenarios later on in the piece. The entrance tickets are affordable and in line with other leading museums, so no problem there. very often you can purchase a combi ticket to see other sites too. You’ve saved time, money, and guaranteed entry. Boom.

What’s Included in the Guided Tour?

What Will You See? Highlights of the Museum

Alright, even without a guided tour, that the museum itself is a total treasure trove of masterpieces, right? Naturally, the big stars will often be there like “Sunflowers,” that iconic work with it’s intense shades of yellow, and then “The Potato Eaters,” too it’s almost that work really gives you the feel of, I mean, life back then. Then there is also, actually, the self-portraits… These are super intense, just because they, I mean, are kind of a direct look into Van Gogh’s soul, I guess. In fact.

What I also like is there’s loads of other work there to just, I mean, kinda see, next. The museum, obviously, isn’t that it just throws all the paintings at you without explaining what you are, just like really looking at. so, there’s tons of information, not only of the works but, obviously, the artist himself. Very often the route through the museum tells you a little story about his life, and how it affected his art too, arguably. Very often you’ll walk through different phases of his style and get an insight into the struggles he encountered.

Is a Guided Tour Worth the Extra Cost?

Right, so, now for the big question. Are guided tours genuinely worth the cost, I mean, at the end of the day? And, the answer to this often isn’t that straightforward, as it arguably depends on what type of museum visitor you’re like being. First of all, If you are like super into art, or Van Gogh in particular, there might be a chance then that a guided tour, clearly, is money super well spent. The insights are cool. If you’re very happy to wander around at your own pace, just reading the signs, and then doing your own research after, which, basically, can be fine, as well, then, basically, maybe save some cash and just get a regular ticket.

In general, often, If you feel that your group doesn’t appreciate art museums but you are there for the gram and to tick it off a to-do list, you may not, obviously, make it a worthwhile expenditure either. One of my best purchases for our trip? Taking an audible tour as a group which has an appealing cost effectiveness if the guided tour would amount to hundreds. Obviously, that has always proven a great experience. You learn things without needing to queue around a tour guide. Each of our family gets a earphone piece and we explore together, pretty cool if you ask me. Another huge advantage of purchasing your own tour audio is that the information is still at your grasp whenever. Want to know who was this painting commissioned by? It’s just there with a press of the button. It makes everyone happy.

The official Van Gogh tour guides are also rather trained, it does just mean that they have lots of knowledge that they are eager to share and explain. And sometimes, often, if you haven’t explored much, the more that you get, that that actually means it might be even better to get one. They bring the stories to life.

Making the Most of Your Visit: Tips and Tricks

so, Here are just some quick tips so that you might kinda make your trip to the Van Gogh Museum just even better. As already mentioned, what I’d say is, too it’s almost, book your tickets way, way, way in advance. In the end. This often isn’t something that I feel to reiterate but some people are still turning up during the day and, as a matter of fact, being declined due to over capacity of visitors. Next, Try just going early or just going later. As a matter of fact. It seems there are definitely fewer crowds, not only during the main middle part of the day. Obviously. Arrive to your time slot roughly 15 minutes before entry, for a smooth start to your exploration!

I’d also really suggest doing a tiny bit of reading about Van Gogh just a bit beforehand to better have something to appreciate. Even knowing about some parts of his life, just to kinda see the real paintings. I would also consider just dedicating 2-3 hours as, you know, time to make this the day. I personally don’t advise fitting lots into one single day. Obviously, You might like the rest of the trip if you do it this way, too it’s almost that way, and might want to come back. Lastly, I think a lot of people enjoy going to the gift shop just so that they have an item that is of Van Gogh or the masterpieces. And it’s not always paintings or canvases to put up in the room. You have socks and shirts and mugs that also, literally, might actually be pretty cool or something to remember this experience, clearly.

While you may opt to save money from not, basically, securing an expensive guide. Take my tips, basically, from getting a group tour which is affordable or at least research some parts about Van Gogh before exploring the location.
