Nusa Lembongan Day Trip Review: Seafood & Island Bliss

Nusa Lembongan

Okay, so you’re thinking about escaping Bali for a day, right? Maybe you’ve spotted some photos of crystal-clear water and folks chilling on pristine beaches, and now Nusa Lembongan is on your radar. That is that island right off Bali’s southeast coast. This review covers a day trip I took that included a grilled seafood lunch, giving you the lowdown on what to expect. We will walk through everything from boat rides to beaches, that is that the kind of stuff you actually need to know before handing over your cash.

The Allure of Nusa Lembongan: A Change of Pace

Dream Beach Nusa Lembongan

Bali is, in a way, pretty awesome, with its rice terraces and vibrant culture. You will see all kinds of things. Still, it gets super crowded, like, “elbow-to-elbow at the beach” crowded. Nusa Lembongan, arguably, provides a bit of an escape. This spot’s got a slower vibe. It’s almost like stepping back in time a bit. Imagine fewer cars, fewer hawkers, and just a general sense of calm; that’s what Lembongan offers. You can get there pretty easily; it is only a short boat ride, that is why a day trip is super doable if you’re short on time. So, the plan? Hop over, soak up some sun, maybe snorkel a bit, and stuff your face with some grilled seafood. Is that alright?

Booking the Trip: What to Look For

Nusa Lembongan booking

Trips to Nusa Lembongan are, of course, plentiful from Bali. You will find tour operators all over Kuta, Seminyak, and Ubud offering the “deal of a lifetime,” right? You know, they always say that. Actually, doing a little research before booking is typically a good idea, to be honest. Check what’s included. A “grilled seafood lunch” can vary widely; it might be a basic fish with rice, or it might be a feast with prawns, squid, and all the trimmings, and so on. Very important too, check if snorkeling gear is included; some operators charge extra for that. That can really add up.

Transportation should seemingly be a key factor, as well. Does the tour include hotel pick-up and drop-off? It usually does, actually, but it’s always good to double-check. Also, look for reviews online, too, especially from folks who have done the specific tour you’re considering. That is really useful for seeing what you get. This will give you a heads-up on the boat quality, the friendliness of the crew, and how good the seafood really is. And stuff like that. Typically, the bigger boats tend to be more stable. This is a big plus if you get seasick easily; that’s so a boatload of helpful hints.

The Boat Ride: Seasickness Alert!

Boat to Nusa Lembongan

The boat ride to Nusa Lembongan usually takes between 30 and 45 minutes, so that’s really not bad, right? But if the seas are rough, very, very rough, it can feel longer. The boats are often speedboats. They go very quickly, alright? So, if you are prone to seasickness, very important, take some motion sickness pills before you go, I mean it. Many of these boats have open-air seating on top. So, that can be really amazing for views; I loved seeing them on top.

It is a very great idea to slather on the sunscreen. You are getting very exposed to the sun, right, and the sea breeze can fool you into thinking you are not burning. Big mistake, I feel, because I forgot to. Also, protect your belongings; sea spray can, seemingly, get everything wet. Maybe bring a dry bag for your camera and phone. The views of Nusa Lembongan as you approach the island are absolutely stunning, with those turquoise waters just shimmering. You can almost make out the sand when you look down, that is very stunning; it is worth grabbing some photos from the boat as you get close.

Snorkeling: Underwater Wonders

Snorkeling Nusa Lembongan

One of the main draws of Nusa Lembongan is definitely the snorkeling. The water’s usually crystal clear, seemingly perfect for spotting all sorts of marine life. Many day trips include stops at several snorkeling spots around the island, which is lovely. You’re likely to see colorful coral, reef fish, and, if you’re extremely lucky, maybe a sea turtle or two, who knows.

Do make sure the snorkeling gear fits properly. An ill-fitting mask is really irritating and will probably ruin the experience, as you want to feel relaxed. Also, listen to your guide’s instructions on where to snorkel and where not to snorkel. Some areas might have strong currents or sensitive coral, you know? Typically, there are also staff in the water to help those of us that might not be a brilliant swimmer. Plus, these guys have eagle eyes, too; they will spot so much of what is around. Be aware, as well; there could be jellyfish. So, just so you know.

Beaches and Bays: Chilling Out

Mushroom Bay Nusa Lembongan

After snorkeling, many tours seemingly take you to one of Nusa Lembongan’s beautiful beaches to relax. Mushroom Bay tends to be very, very popular, with its white sand and calm, turquoise waters. That is that the kind of stuff I really wanted.

Many places on Mushroom bay allow the traveler to grab a sun lounger, too, so just so you can properly relax for a while. Do check out Dream Beach too; its got the dramatic cliffside views and crashing waves that the Instagrammers just literally fall over. This area isn’t as good for swimming; however, it’s lovely to chill there with a drink, too, or something to that effect. Anyway, you could buy some locally produced goods, and a lovely chat comes free as standard. Is that alright?

Grilled Seafood Lunch: The Highlight (or Not?)

Seafood Lunch Nusa Lembongan

So, here comes the main event. The “grilled seafood lunch” could be, I feel, either amazing or so-so. Much seemingly depends on the tour operator and the day’s catch. In some respects, you can say that, right? My lunch was on the beach, with tables set up right on the sand, which was lovely. It felt amazing, actually.

It’s like your experience may include grilled fish, prawns, squid, rice, vegetables, and some fruit for dessert, seemingly all laid out buffet-style. It was good. But was it fabulous? Well, it wasn’t bad; it’s nearly always really satisfying after a morning of swimming and sunbathing. Watch out for bones in the fish, obviously. Plus, maybe grab some extra chili sauce if you like it spicy. Don’t expect Michelin star cuisine; that might never happen; it’s a beachside grill, okay? Even if it isn’t the best meal ever, it’s certainly nice to eat that type of food whilst relaxing on a white sandy beach.

Exploring the Island: Beyond the Beach

Exploring Nusa Lembongan

Some day trips do, seemingly, include a bit of time to explore Nusa Lembongan beyond the beach, which can be really great if you fancy it. You may get to visit the seaweed farms. Seaweed farming is that industry. This is important for this spot’s local economy. Plus, its lovely to see that.

You might also get to see the Panorama Point. This offers pretty spectacular views of the island and the ocean, seemingly that would be the point. Plus, if you can rent a scooter, this offers a more independent approach, I feel. Maybe visit the Yellow Bridge linking Nusa Lembongan to Nusa Ceningan; be very careful, actually, as that bridge is only suitable for a small bike or for walking. But make sure you’ve got a valid driving license and are confident on a scooter before setting off on your own. Plus, wear a helmet; that goes without saying, I would argue.

A Few Words on Nusa Ceningan: The Smaller Neighbor

Nusa Ceningan

Speaking of Nusa Ceningan, seemingly it is the small island connected to Nusa Lembongan by the Yellow Bridge. You could explore there too, if you have the time, alright? This place offers super chill vibes, very, very lovely cliffside bars, and that is a place where you just chill. Anyway, there’s also the Blue Lagoon, with its unbelievably blue water. It can, however, be fairly crowded with people getting “the perfect shot”, which seems mad, I would argue. You might like the Mahana Point jump. This allows those that feel like risking their neck an option to dive into the sea. Is that the best thing to do ever?

Nusa Ceningan really is less developed compared to Lembongan. So, seemingly you are getting fewer crowds and a more authentic island vibe, almost. Rent a scooter to do some exploration; just be cautious on the roads. I saw two westerners completely covered in bandages, you want to miss out on that one; stay safe. You could check out the Secret Beach; some folks rave about this. The beach offers calm waters and secluded sands. Typically it looks amazing on Insta!

Things to Bring on Your Nusa Lembongan Day Trip

Essentials to bring on your Nusa Lembongan day trip

Very, very important. Packing correctly makes all the difference. A list is helpful; just so you check everything.

  • Sunscreen: Actually, it’s really crucial, especially high-SPF, to protect your skin from that equatorial sun.
  • Swimsuit: Well, obviously, you could forget it, too; you would be able to buy another one, in the moment. But not ideal, to be honest.
  • Towel: Almost all tours supply a towel. Checking before departure is always helpful. You probably want more than just one towel for lying down, or you might want a large towel, whatever.
  • Sunglasses: Of course, to shield your eyes from the glare. Polarized sunglasses tend to be a really smart option too, but a designer label, right? Just showing off then, is it?
  • Hat: Some head protection; actually, some people would wear one these days all day everyday. So I notice
  • Water shoes: Really helpful if you plan on walking on the reef or rocky areas. So they can keep those lovely feet in perfect order.
  • Dry bag: Almost definitely for protecting your electronics from water damage, very important if you plan to take images.
  • Motion sickness pills: Could be, really, a lifesaver if you’re prone to seasickness, especially if that sea gets a bit angry.
  • Cash: A few places on Nusa Lembongan don’t accept cards. I find the card tends to be much more reliable these days, don’t you find.

Is a Nusa Lembongan Day Trip Worth It?

worth it

So, is it actually worth the money? Yes, in most cases, without a doubt, especially if you need to escape the craziness of mainland Bali for the peace of somewhere quieter. A day trip to Nusa Lembongan can feel pretty brilliant to be honest, and if you are with somebody; that adds a dimension for sure.

But the snorkeling is awesome, the beaches are just spectacular, and chilling with a cold drink while some good stuff gets fired over a grill does tend to make all of the troubles just go away. It might not be the most genuine cultural experience, admittedly, I suppose. So, there is the point. Also, it might not be completely off the beaten path these days. And it won’t really blow up the internet. But as an easy escape from the craziness of southern Bali, a Nusa Lembongan day trip is just what you’d call very delightful, is it? Typically people love it.
