Arusha Materuni Coffee Tour

It’s almost a chance to experience local culture, see some beautiful scenery, and, of course, get your coffee fix all in one trip. This review, yet, goes into the details, you know, sharing my experience so you can decide if it’s something you’d enjoy, too.

What to Expect on the Materuni Coffee Tour

Materuni Coffee Tour

The day usually, rather, starts early, that is with a pickup from your accommodation in Arusha. Then, you are driven to Materuni Village, very near the base of Mount Kilimanjaro. The drive, in a way, can be a bit bumpy, so it’s always good to be prepared for that. Once you get there, expect a pretty warm welcome from the villagers, who will be your guides for the day. The whole thing involves, maybe, a hike, a coffee-making demonstration, and a visit to the Materuni Waterfalls, with lunch provided too.

The Coffee-Making Experience: From Bean to Cup

Coffee-Making Experience

The heart of this tour is, perhaps, the coffee-making experience. So, too you will see every step of the process, more or less, from how they harvest the coffee beans to roasting them over an open fire. Everyone gets involved; you grind the roasted beans by hand using a mortar and pestle. The smell is almost amazing! It’s typically, usually, a hands-on thing, so be prepared to put some effort in and to have some fun along the way, too. Finally, that is when you get to taste the freshly brewed coffee – really unlike anything you get from a coffee shop. It’s quite fresh and pretty strong.

Materuni Waterfalls: A Refreshing Hike and View

Materuni Waterfalls

After the coffee part, very often you hike to Materuni Waterfalls. It is, anyway, a beautiful trek through the forest, so do wear comfortable shoes because the path can be a bit slippery in places. Along the way, we saw many beautiful flowers and the guide told me many things about the different trees, which, of course, added a great depth to the excursion. The waterfalls are quite, rather, spectacular, with crystal clear water cascading down. It’s arguably a great spot for taking photos and, of course, you could even take a dip if you’re brave enough to try it! Just a little word of caution, the water is somewhat cold, like your toes might curl!

The Hot Springs: Relaxation Time

Hot Springs Tanzania

Following the refreshing visit to the falls, it is often time to continue towards the hot springs. Usually, typically, these springs provide an excellent place to relax. So, in some respects, the warm water feels pretty good after all the walking. The hot springs tend to be more of a large, open pool rather, than some geothermal wonder, that is but it’s definitely a cool spot to take it easy and maybe chat with other people on the tour, or not.

Lunch and Cultural Interaction

Tanzania cultural tour

The tour includes lunch, as a matter of fact. Very often the meals served are something like traditional Tanzanian dishes, possibly rice, beans, and some local veggies, things like that. This provides a nice taste of the local cuisine and, too, it is a chance to interact more with the local people. Actually, listening to stories or asking the questions tends to enrich the whole experience, basically helping you understand a bit more about the community. The food tasted home-cooked, just delicious.

Is It Worth It? A Balanced Perspective

After experiencing everything, you know, from the coffee making to the waterfalls and hot springs, the overall feeling, finally, first, for example, for instance, is positive. Arguably, the Arusha Materuni Coffee Tour is much, much more than just a coffee tour, that is. It’s more or less a chance to step away from the typical tourist experience, which could be why some folks consider this to be very immersive.

  • Cultural Immersion: Experience local life firsthand.
  • Beautiful Scenery: Materuni Waterfalls is really stunning.
  • Hands-On Activities: So you get to participate in the coffee-making process.
  • Relaxation: Chill in the hot springs.

So, basically, I would definitely recommend this tour for you. Right? It’s that good.
