So, you’re thinking of heading up Gache Mountain to watch the sunset, are you? That’s totally understandable. It’s, very often, marked clearly, winding gradually up through the woods. That is not to say that you shouldn’t have a map; still, having good hiking boots tends to be important too, seeing as you might be hiking up steep terrain.

What to Expect on the Climb

The trip itself tends to be quite interesting, so it appears. You start in these, really, quaint Swiss villages. Slowly you will find yourself moving through areas that have big, aged trees, with the sound of cowbells somewhere in the background. At the halfway mark you reach these panoramic views looking across the Interlaken region. The ascent has a fair amount of elevation, which means, of course, that you could want to plan in some stops for water. And maybe some chocolate?

The Grand Finale: Sunset Views from the Top

When you finally reach the crest, that initial glance, is that something? That point tends to stay with you. Below, the lakes shimmer. Surrounding the area, you get views of the Jungfrau and Mönch peaks, their surfaces sparkling in sunlight. I like this location in particular because the summit offers these pretty open areas. So it, more or less, feels like everyone can enjoy the scene without being crowded. Also, you’ll probably want to claim a spot early since, after all, it’s quite the popular location, seemingly.

Going to see the sunset from Gache Mountain needs planning. So first, check weather reports; clear skies are something you need to experience it properly. That goes without saying, yet be prepared for mountain temperatures too. Even when summer sunshine is forecast down in the valleys, there are many ways that it can feel cooler up at the high altitudes. Bring some snacks and fluids, definitely. Layer your clothes too, and, just in case, I tend to carry a headlamp, seeing as you might walk down a little in partial darkness.

Why not plan a vacation around the area? Interlaken sits really close to the foot of the mountain, so to speak, with options like boat trips on Lake Thun, to paragliding ventures among the high elevations. There tend to be some seriously cool, scenic villages not too far from the valley either. These are the places to dive into, what I think are, pretty amazing Swiss architecture.
