Ultimate Review: Amsterdam Food Tour, is it Worth it?

Amsterdam, that’s a stunning city known for its canals, museums, and of course, its rather unique food scene. Getting a feel for all the different tastes can be quite the challenge, yet very fun, so, like your, what better way to see it all than with a guided tour? I recently tried out the “Ultimate Amsterdam Food Tour,” and I am so ready to share my thoughts. I mean, I want to give you the inside scoop on whether it’s genuinely worth your time and money, because, you know, vacation budgets are like, super important.

What to Count on From the Amsterdam Food Tour

typical dutch snacks

First off, it’s almost a good idea to get an overview. This food tour says it will introduce you to the true Amsterdam, which, you know, it attempts to do by hitting up tons of places, not just like, typical tourist spots. I’m talking about small, local businesses that have so much to offer, which, for me, is very crucial. We want that like, true taste, that’s very real and less manufactured, right? From what I experienced, expect to sample stuff that gives you a sense for the culinary side of Amsterdam, yet it could depend so, like, you may try out cheeses, herring, fries, pastries, and some cool other surprise treats along the way.

The guides, and stuff, tend to be locals, and they just love telling stories about, well, food and the city, yet that’s only from what I saw. They can often offer info that, in some respects, really brings it to life. You know, they give you some historical context along with some fun stories. Now, the tour, it usually takes about 3 to 4 hours. So, you see various neighborhoods, so, yeah, come comfy and wear your stretchy pants.

Highlights of My Food Tour Adventure

herring tasting Amsterdam

OK, so, that herring! Now, that might be one of the first things you should know. Listen, if you haven’t tried Dutch herring, which, in that case, this is the moment. This tour had us stop at this, like, small fish stand. Yet it felt that it had existed for years, and it gave us fresh herring with onions and pickles. And yes, I was rather worried at first, but now, honestly? That salty, briny taste with the tang of the pickles? It was just, you know, surprisingly awesome. Yet I never liked it before. It wasn’t something I might’ve picked out on my own.

Fries, right? So, you just can’t go to Amsterdam and miss out on the fries. What’s cool is the tour didn’t just take us to, well, any place. Yet we made a stop at a spot known, arguably, as the place for the best “patat” in town. Now, they serve their fries super crispy. After that, you top them with heaps of toppings, such as mayo, curry ketchup, and onions. It seems very simple, yet is oh-so satisfying; I enjoyed every bite.

We got a taste of the local cheese at what is, apparently, a family-run shop. Oh my goodness, very wonderful. It had tastes of Gouda, Edam, and some cool, smoked cheeses. It might have helped me discover that cheese isn’t so bad, and maybe the best souvenir to get in Amsterdam, as well. Now, a lot of the people I spoke with told me it tasted delicious.

The Tour Route: So How Does it work?

Jordaan district Amsterdam

The tour mostly seems to work around the city center, such as the Jordaan district. This, by the way, has some cool streets, cool canals, and some neat independent shops. Now, that area by itself gives you a good idea of what the culture is, what the background of the city is, such as if, seemingly, it takes you on a good, little wander through markets and tucked-away spots. Which it will! That said, what stood out about it?

That guide. He was obviously a local! A bubbly person, very fun, that seemed to like sharing everything with all of us. He was quite open and pointed out, too, lots of background facts. Now, this info seemed really cool, specifically the parts on Dutch food traditions and why specific dishes, in that case, became popular.

How’s it Priced?

Dutch stroopwafels

Okay, let’s discuss the costs. Food tours like that usually swing somewhere from $75 to $120, per person. Yet it changes a bit according to the specific tour, discounts, and so on. What’s cool, I mean it, is what the tour actually provides versus the fee paid for the enjoyment, so, actually, in this respect it seemed fair.

Think of it this way: that, like, $85 more or less that it is covers all of your tastings. But not drinks. As a matter of fact, the insider info on the city also does some justice for your trip, yet that’s from what I’ve gathered. If you consider that it, arguably, can save you time scouting places while also feeding you bits from all over town, very fair. Then that’s really cool. Check that you are aware of the inclusions and exclusions before you book, such as tipping and what’s actually covered. In short, transparency just is always better.

Some possible downsides

crowded street amsterdam

Here are a couple of downsides that people might see. Remember: Food tours generally are better whenever the team stays tight knit, so sometimes that’s how they work. Now, large teams are alright, but only if the guide, actually, can handle groups very well. When tours, at the end of the day, feel a bit crowded, it kind of ruins some of the experiences, like, the more unique experiences you would have from that group setting.

Here’s a thought. You need to appreciate almost everything, arguably, and want an unbiased experience for trying food from, what may appear, different cultures. I saw, you know, people who weren’t fans of the herring, so naturally the herring stood out in this conversation, but it did stand out in Amsterdam culture, to be quite frank. So, that said, if your tour offers it, you might not enjoy that.

Verdict: Must you test it out?

canals amsterdam netherlands

To get the heart of my assessment, in my opinion: that “Ultimate Amsterdam Food Tour” that I had taken is a slam dunk for tourists that want a cool summary to eat throughout the area. A good blend of culture, sights and culinary stuff to get that full sensory and cultural overload, kind of, while still having someone local guide you. That guide did their best with the city so I would highly suggest it, for most!

But remember now! The money matters but that does not mean this should dissuade someone! Should the things previously mentioned be ok with them, in fact, do it! See Amsterdam, and get to chow down through all its neighborhoods. Who might have predicted the city that way?!

  • Good summary on the Amsterdam food culture
  • Local guides provide helpful context and history
  • Sample things throughout the different hidden restaurants and sights of the town
  • Worth what’s being offered in its prices!
