Review: Your Day Exploring Da Nang Lady Buddha, Marble Mountain, & Hoi An

Alright, planning a trip to central Vietnam? A lot of people think that squeezing in the Lady Buddha, Marble Mountains, and Hoi An all into one day is too much. Like, is it even possible to really enjoy any of these places if you’re rushing? Well, I spent a day doing just that, and I wanted to give you the lowdown. Hopefully, this review is just a bit useful if you’re considering a similar adventure!

Setting off to Da Nang’s Lady Buddha

Da Nang Lady Buddha

So, the day started pretty early to actually make it all work. First up, we headed to the Linh Ung Pagoda, which, of course, is where the Lady Buddha statue keeps watch. Getting there, you know, the views overlooking Da Nang were already something. Looking out and seeing the city wake up below, is just a very special scene.

When you arrive to the Lady Buddha it’s almost difficult to just describe her presence. This immense, stark white figure stands at something like 67 meters (or 220 feet). Just standing there, it really makes you feel quite small and at peace. The pagoda has some truly beautiful bonsai arrangements, too it’s almost worth the walk just to see them, plus detailed carvings, if you’re really into architecture or art or that sort of stuff. I mean, give yourself around an hour or two here. And then think about accounting for crowds because, as you can imagine, a popular place like this can sometimes get very busy, indeed. That’s when its time to take the tour to Marble mountain.

Exploring the Caves & Temples of Marble Mountain

Marble Mountain Da Nang

Right after seeing Lady Buddha, our next stop was Marble Mountain. It’s that group of limestone and marble hills sort of poking out of the landscape just south of Da Nang, and, let me tell you, it’s quite different from anything else you will see. Each mountain is associated with one of the five elements.

Climbing up the steps to the top is, you know, quite a workout, but so worth it. So many caves, tunnels and temples that make you pause to actually absorb it. The caves are home to temples and shrines, lit, for instance, by natural light filtering through openings above, to illuminate intricate statues. If you’re claustrophobic, maybe, just maybe skip some of the deeper cave explorations. Allow two to three hours here, and don’t forget comfy shoes—seriously, you’ll be doing a fair bit of walking.

The Ancient Charm of Hoi An

Hoi An ancient city

From Marble Mountain, it’s like a 30-minute drive to Hoi An, an old trading port that clearly is on the bucket list for loads of travellers. Once there, it’s really easy to get wonderfully lost in the narrow streets lined with these old houses. Think yellow walls covered in bougainvillea…very very Instagrammable, for sure! The vibe, especially in the afternoon when the sun gets lower, is also super magical.

You could actually walk over the Japanese Covered Bridge. You know, just a landmark, right? Find one of the local tailors. Hoi An, like your home, is almost very well-known for getting clothes custom-made. Take a relaxed boat ride on the Thu Bon River at sunset. This gave some amazing photographs, so you can always show friends or strangers the photos. It’s also something that is worthwhile, it gave the most photographic oppurtunites for social media. Hoi An deserves like, at least, three to four hours. Stick around for dinner. You should experience the town lit up with hundreds of lanterns. And yeah, maybe try some of the street food stalls, just remember to double-check the hygiene is good.

Things to think about with your day trip

travel planning

Packing comfortable shoes is almost so, so crucial, for instance. Like seriously, you’ll thank yourself for it! Especially on the climbing sections. You might like to take bottled water because, in some respects, staying hydrated, is vital, especially in the heat. Vietnam’s climate tends to be quite challenging. Remember the sunscreen! Especially for Marble Mountain. While cloud cover can happen from time to time, you might actually get burned quickly even without really noticing it.

You’ll likely want to get familiar with how to handle being polite. Knowing a few basic Vietnamese phrases really tends to go a long way. Like, saying “xin chào” (hello) or “cảm ơn” (thank you) brings a smile to people’s faces. The traffic is intense. So keep that in mind whether you opt to ride a motorbike or simply try to cross the road. Be patient and really watch what you are doing, even when following the crowd or other pedestrians. A guided tour tends to reduce some hassle when organizing transport, which might be what you prefer. But doing it yourself can easily work too, though maybe expect that there could actually be challenges when arranging rides from place to place.

Is this Day Trip Really Worth It?

Vietnam day trip

So, back to the big question: Can you do Da Nang’s Lady Buddha, Marble Mountain, and Hoi An in one day? Short answer, like your family, absolutely! But like a friend’s house, you really need to be organized, disciplined with your time, and accepting that everything is on a somewhat tight schedule. It will be, to be honest, rather quick-paced and pretty packed. So think about that. But, like you would when thinking about a night on the town, if you’re limited on time, it does, sort of, allow you to experience some top spots. And this also may offer you insight that will permit planning more travel later. If you’ve got more time though, and I really, really think dedicating a full day to Hoi An is the move. No matter what, doing some exploring is always very rewarding. Just get ready for adventure!
