Tenerife Teide & Garachico Tour: Is It Worth It? A Review

Considering a grand circle of Tenerife? So, a complete island experience jammed into a single day can sound a bit wild, right? Well, lots of tours promise exactly that, whisking you away to Mount Teide, the charming village of Garachico, the historic town of Icod de los Vinos, and the picturesque Masca Valley. So, that kind of trip might just be on your radar, but before you actually commit, you probably wanna know exactly what you’re getting into. Right? Well, I recently gave it a shot, and I’m going to give you a totally honest lowdown – no fluff, just facts. It’s almost like a travel diary, but, you know, more useful if you’re planning your own adventure.

What’s the Big Idea, Basically?

Mount Teide

Okay, the general plan is simple. You start out early, and you basically hit the main sights of Tenerife in one fell swoop. I’m talking about a trip that covers a whole lot of ground – volcanic landscapes at Teide National Park, that super pretty coastal town of Garachico, the famous Dragon Tree in Icod, and the dramatic gorges of Masca. So, the idea is to see it all, but the real question is whether that much crammed into a single day is a good idea. Well, that’s what we’re trying to figure out.

Now, the specific itinerary might change a little depending on the tour operator you choose, too it’s almost like choosing from a menu, but basically expect early pickup, lots of driving, quick stops at each location, and, then a late return. Sounds tiring? It really might be, so let’s unpack it and see if it suits your travel style.

Teide National Park: Volcano Views and Lunar Landscapes

Teide National Park landscape

First off, Teide National Park is basically a must-see. So, the volcanic scenery is super amazing. We’re talking about driving through cooled lava fields that look like they’re straight from the moon. Well, the sheer scale is really impressive, you know? It’s a big place, and that main attraction is Mount Teide itself, Spain’s highest peak.

The tour I took gave us enough time to snap some photos and, honestly just admire the views. But the thing is, that the park is really big. You could easily spend a whole day hiking here. That is, if you like that kind of thing. So, a short visit will give you a taste, yet it might leave you wanting to explore more. That, or wanting to move on to somewhere else, naturally.

Depending on the tour, too it’s almost as if, like, playing roulette, you might get the option to ride the cable car up closer to the peak (that will be at your expense, usually), but, that usually depends on the weather and, honestly the queues. I didn’t get the chance, though, so bear that in mind if you’re hoping for that super-high view.

Garachico: A Town Reborn from Lava

Garachico Tenerife

Next up is Garachico. That’s like a real contrast to Teide’s stark landscape. That pretty coastal town was pretty much destroyed by a volcanic eruption way back when. But the locals rebuilt, too it’s almost like the town rose from the ashes, and it’s absolutely gorgeous today.

The black volcanic rock pools right next to the sea are something really special. So, the tour gives you some time to walk around, see the old architecture, and, well, have a snack or drink. The atmosphere is pretty relaxed, in a way. And, frankly, it was my favourite stop on the whole trip.

I didn’t get enough time to really relax, though. So, just as I found a perfect spot for coffee, we had to leave. You kind of get used to that quick pace on these full-day tours, but still…

Icod de los Vinos: Home of the Ancient Dragon Tree

Icod de los Vinos Dragon Tree

Icod de los Vinos is basically famous for one thing. I mean, it has other stuff going on, but basically it’s the Dragon Tree – a really old tree, and very, very unique. Apparently, they think it might be a thousand years old! Anyway, that town stop is mainly to see that tree, which, let’s face it, looks very impressive in photos, very impressive indeed.

You often view it from a park. Of course, the tour gives you just enough time to take your pictures. So, that experience is rather quick. If you’re not that into trees, honestly you might not be too thrilled. I found it pretty interesting. Well, a very old tree is rather fascinating, actually.

Masca Valley: Dramatic Scenery and Winding Roads

Masca Valley Tenerife

The drive to Masca is very exciting. The roads wind around mountains, very windy roads they are. Well, the views are absolutely spectacular. It’s kind of scary and amazing all at the same time. Anyway, Masca itself is this small village nestled in the mountains. We were there, it felt almost like we were at the end of the road, in the very best way.

The tour normally includes a short stop. So, that would let you wander around and take some more photos. Honestly, the scenery is just stunning. Just make sure you’re okay with heights if you aren’t okay with heights.

What About Lunch? And The Tour Guides?

Lunch arrangements will be different, that is clear, from one tour company to another. Well, some include lunch in the tour. Others, it is almost as if you were flying by the seat of your pants. So, they just stop somewhere and leave you to find something yourself. My tour had a stop at a local restaurant, and honestly the food was pretty good and reasonably priced. So, I can’t really complain.

The tour guides can vary, of course. I was lucky. Our guide was friendly and, actually he really knew a lot about the island. But sometimes, you might get a guide who is less engaging, less passionate about their work, just so you know.

Is This Tour Actually For You? A Few Pointers

So, after a long day of seeing Tenerife’s top spots, here are a few things you should consider. If you love to see as much as possible, actually you will like it. Well, you won’t get bored, as you will be constantly moving. You cover a lot of ground, and it gives you a taste of what the island has to offer. Basically, you’ll know which places you’d like to revisit, or maybe skip, next time. It also suits if you’re short on time. One day is better than nothing. Well, the tour lets you tick off the must-see locations super quickly.

But, a lot of travel is just about relaxing. I mean, a whirlwind tour is probably not your best option. So, this kind of trip can feel very rushed. Especially, if you like taking your time to explore. And, frankly, if you have small children, maybe it’s not such a great fit for them.

So, the Verdict?

Okay, so this ‘Tenerife Teide Garachico Icod and Masca Full Day Tour’? Honestly, it’s not terrible at all. And I’d say it offers decent value, in a way. However, you really need to know what you’re signing up for. Well, you’ll see a lot. Yet you’re not going to have heaps of time at each spot. If you’re okay with that tradeoff, it might be the right choice for you. Now you get to make your decision, like your own little adventure.

  • For: Great if you’re short on time and want a taste of Tenerife’s highlights.
  • Against: Can feel rushed; not ideal if you prefer a relaxed pace or have very young children.
  • Tip: Check what’s included (lunch, cable car) and read recent reviews of the tour operator.
