From Karteros Review: Bus Tour to Preveli Beach, Vai Forest & More
So, you’re thinking about taking a full-day bus tour from Karteros to Preveli Beach and Vai Forest, right? It’s almost a pretty popular choice for seeing some of the gems on Crete, and honestly, it is that popular for good reason. I’m going to give you my insights and tips, based on, you know, my personal experience. Is that cool?
First Stop: Preveli Beach—More Than Just a Photo Op
Okay, Preveli Beach, or as a lot of folks, like your tour guides, may say, “Palm Beach,” is arguably one of those places you really just have to see to believe. Now, the bus will drop you off a bit up the hill, which means you will have, yet, a bit of a walk down to the beach. It’s like a twenty-minute hike down some stone steps – not super hard, but, that is, not exactly a walk in the park either, specially if the sun is, you know, blazing. Keep this in mind if you’ve got any mobility issues, because, you know, the way back up will be, that, more taxing. Once you’re there, though, very…wow. The meeting of the river and the sea, the palm trees—it is, actually, kind of breathtaking.
Spend your time like this: swim in the rather cool, clear water, explore the little river that runs through the palm forest, or just chill on the sand. I suggest walking up the river a bit—you might just find some seriously secluded spots for a dip. Just a little tip: bring water shoes because those pebbles can get very hot. I did not and so that’s a bit of a lesson learned the hard way. Budget at least two to three hours here, since, anyway, you’ll want to savor it.
Vai Forest: Europe’s Only Palm Forest—A Unique Experience
Next, it’s usually off to Vai Forest, famous because, basically, it’s the largest palm forest in Europe. And okay, yes, it’s another beach. Though this one does has its own character. What’s different? More, or less, the sheer number of palm trees – seriously it’s an amazing sight. That’s because it’s really, really unique.
Now, this beach can get pretty crowded, mostly in peak season. Anyway, if you can, try and wander away from the very central area. To do this walk along the beach a bit and see if you can find a quieter spot. In some respects you might even find a spot under the palms to chill in. As a matter of fact, Vai is also great for watersports, so if you’re into windsurfing or paddleboarding, it’s an idea to check it out. Also, apparently, there are these cool platforms you can climb for fantastic views of the entire forest and beach, too, it’s a bit worth it.
Lunch Stop: Making the Most of It
Most tours will take you to a local taverna for lunch, typically, it’s somewhere near Vai or on the way back. Just so you are aware these spots, actually, cater to tourists, so the food might be decent but, like your, it may not be the most traditional Cretan fare. It’s still worth trying some of the local specialties though! The dakos (a barley rusk topped with tomatoes and cheese) or some fresh seafood are pretty great choices.
Anyway, this lunch stop is often a set menu or a buffet situation, too it’s a solid chance to relax, recharge, and maybe try chatting with others from your tour. Seriously I recommend asking the staff for their recommendation! Then you might just discover a hidden culinary gem. Now a little note, drinks are usually not included in the tour price, that, so, in other words, keep that in mind when budgeting.
The Bus Ride: Comfort and Scenery
Bus rides…well, they are an essential part of the whole day. Now, the buses themselves vary – some have air conditioning that works, like your, and some are a little, yet, less amazing. It’s luck of the draw. The drive from Karteros to the eastern side of Crete can be quite long, too it’s often around three to four hours, so, actually, bring something to keep you entertained. This might include, say, books, podcasts, or fully loaded playlists.
One definite plus, though: The scenery can be very lovely. As a matter of fact you’ll drive through mountains, villages, and along the coast. Is that beautiful? So, try to get a window seat! Take it easy, enjoy the views, and treat the ride as a little sightseeing excursion all its own. Maybe you want to nap as well after spending time out in the hot Crete sun.
Is This Tour Really Worth It? My Final Thoughts
Overall, the bus tour from Karteros to Preveli Beach and Vai Forest is almost a pretty fantastic option to see some seriously beautiful and, you know, very iconic spots on Crete. If you are not thrilled by crowds or don’t mind long bus rides then, you know, I do seriously recommend it! That said be sure to, like your, pack carefully, hydrate, and embrace the adventure.
You might also want to consider that: This tour offers really solid value for the money. As a matter of fact it takes you to two stunning locations in one day. You might just not be able to reach easily on your own. Just, in a way, be ready for an action-packed day and, just a little, possibly a touch touristy experiences. Now go ahead! After reading this get ready and get ready to have an unforgettable time!
