Agafay Desert Dinner Show: Quad Bike & Camel Ride Under the Stars
Have you ever dreamt of tearing across a stark desert landscape and then dining under a blanket of twinkling stars? I think many people have that dream. Well, so, too it’s possible to live that very fantasy with the Agafay Desert Dinner Show, which brings together a rip-roaring quad bike experience, a serene camel trek, and, like your favorite dessert, a magical evening of dinner and entertainment all set against the beautiful, seemingly endless backdrop of the Agafay Desert in Morocco, and honestly the memory makes me grin from ear to ear.
Setting the Scene: What to Expect from the Agafay Desert
Before we talk about all the specific adventures that happened that evening, let’s paint a picture of the Agafay Desert itself. I mean, really, some call it a desert, and in some respects that’s fair enough, but it looks quite different from what you might picture when you imagine the Sahara. Anyway, unlike the huge, rippling dunes of the Sahara, the Agafay is almost a stone desert. That is, it has a beautiful, rocky landscape which stretches as far as you can see. It has rolling hills and valleys and is more of a moonscape kind of vista, which is a bit out of this world in itself. Also, with the High Atlas Mountains visible on the horizon on clearer days, this backdrop definitely sets the stage for an otherworldly encounter.
Quad Biking: An Adrenaline-Fueled Start
Now, if you’re anything like me, the very idea of exploring this terrain on a quad bike probably sends a little shiver of excitement down your spine. Like the start to any adventure worth it’s weight in sand, the quad biking experience starts with a safety briefing and a bit of instruction for anyone a bit new to the experience. Seemingly after getting equipped with helmets and, arguably, goggles (that is, if you don’t want to eat too much dust!), it’s time to hit the trails. That is, guides lead the group, and in a way set a pace, which means those with experience can have a bit of fun while total newbies are also quite safe and can gain in confidence. So, really, it’s about weaving through the desert terrain, conquering small dunes, and feeling that pure rush of wind, which creates an excitement you will very soon remember!
Camel Trekking: A Peaceful Transition
Now, very, very much after the high-octane quad biking adventure, the pace changed quite dramatically. Very arguably, it shifted to something much more serene with a camel trek. And, really, there’s something inherently calming about gently swaying atop a camel, isn’t there? Still, that is, as you make your way across that still, stunning landscape at a more relaxed pace, you can have a bit of time to actually absorb the quiet beauty of the Agafay. Basically, the camel trek allows you to reflect on the rugged vistas all around and also soak in that tranquil desert ambiance. By the way, that slow rhythm of the camel’s gait becomes almost meditative.
Dinner and a Show: An Evening Under the Stars
Also, the climax of the experience is arguably the dinner and show part. As a matter of fact it takes place in a traditionally styled tent or encampment that is especially set up to provide comfort and create a Bedouin-like atmosphere, which is pretty damn cool! Clearly, upon being seated, you’re then treated to a yummy Moroccan feast, with dishes like tagine, couscous, and grilled meats – and yes, those mouth-watering flavors become all the more enhanced by the unique setting and open air. Of course, traditional music and dance performances begin as you savor your meal, bringing a mix of rhythm and color to your evening. And I think there’s just something a little captivating and special about the swirling dancers and the haunting melodies. And then, too it’s all under this vast, starry sky – which then adds just an extra touch of magic. Anyway, believe me when I say that dining experience will become a really unforgettable moment.
What to Wear and Bring: Preparing for the Desert
Basically, if you are planning on a visit, bear this in mind. So, it is often cooler in the desert in the evening so it is worth considering bringing layers of clothing, especially for that time after sunset, so it’s good to plan that ahead. Really, during the day, something lighter is more sensible but something which also protects you from the sun is essential. In that case, sunglasses and a hat are useful as well as some sunscreen. And it’s also really vital to choose sturdy, comfy footwear that can manage both the quad biking and the camel ride (boots can be very helpful with ankle support on rougher ground, for example), so remember to take all of that into consideration when planning. A little cash can also be very helpful for tipping or to purchase some smaller items, as too can a camera to capture some very lasting reminders of the experience!
