Edinburgh Haunted Vaults Tour Review: Sensory Overload

Have you wondered what lurks underneath one of Europe’s most haunted cities? So, too, did I, so I looked into one tour that promised to be more than just your everyday fright fest. Anyway, I’m talking about the “Edinburgh Multi-Sensory Adults Haunted Vaults Night Tour.” Like, not only does it take you down into the infamous Edinburgh vaults, but it aims, apparently, to mess with all your senses, that is if you’re brave enough.

What’s the Hype About, Really?

Right, what makes this particular vault tour stand out? In fact, there are quite a few ghost tours going on down in Edinburgh, as a matter of fact, you will see heaps of people holding lanterns heading underground. What’s different, you see, with the Multi-Sensory one is that, that tour leans into creating a proper experience. Okay, they aren’t just telling stories, what they actually do is use sounds, smells, and very specific lighting in the hope it makes your skin crawl. To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect.

Sounds and Scents in the Dark

Okay, get this, right when you start dropping into the depths, they, literally, pump in specific scents. Anyway, they are not all pleasant, it can range from a waft that is kind of old and earthy to something that, seemingly, smells a little bit like decay. Just a little. It’s like, totally aimed, you see, at jolting your stomach. At the same time, very subtle sound effects, kind of like whispers or scrapes, that, almost, play tricks on your ears. So, you might start thinking you are hearing things that aren’t even really there, just like I did.

Light and Shadow Play

Very precise lighting is one trick they use pretty effectively. Anyway, the lights dim and brighten at key moments. In some respects, what that does, in fact, is cast crazy shadows. It can almost make those dark corners seem, arguably, like they are moving. Anyway, it does keep you on edge, and you’ll find your eyes are very busy trying to make sense of it all. Right, the guides use this, in a way, to build up the suspense as they share some chilling stories.

The Stories Themselves

As a matter of fact, all the sensory stuff wouldn’t really land if the stories were garbage. Right, but, thankfully, the tales told are rooted, more or less, in local history. I mean, this is mixed, actually, with urban legends linked to the vaults. Anyway, you hear about all kinds of stuff, like body snatchers, people living in extreme poverty, and, of course, ghosts who still, seemingly, linger around the shadowy corners. At the end of the day, they present all the info with enough drama to, seemingly, keep you invested, just like your favourite campfire tale, you know?

Guides Who Bring It

Okay, that tour’s success hangs really heavy on who is running it. As a matter of fact, you don’t want someone just droning on, do you? Right, the guides they use seem pretty enthusiastic about the spooky stuff. Basically, they act, I’d say, more like performers than just straight-up tour leaders. In short, what they do is help create that environment. You see, there’s passion in their voice as they talk through the grisly details, what’s more they react well if people are getting spooked. Like, it definitely made things more amusing and memorable, and more authentic.

Is It Actually Scary, Though?

Let’s cut to the chase, is this tour actually scary? Seriously, it all hinges on your personal scare tolerance. Very. In some respects, it’s less about jump scares. However, more about a creeping unease. Pretty much, that comes from all the sensory shenanigans and the stories being told. Pretty. So, it creates, apparently, a palpable sense of something just not being right, it’s almost like paranoia in the dark. But, at the end of the day, I can say it made me jump once or twice.

Perfect for a Group?

Okay, the tour I went on was with a group, which I think added to it. Pretty much, it is a bonding experience when you’re, very, experiencing something creepy together. Like, seeing other people jump or hearing them gasp kind of ratchets up the atmosphere. And stuff. Also, after the tour, just like with your friends, you’ve got something to talk about, right? Also you’re dissecting, really, if that sound was really a ghost or just some clever speaker trickery.

Things You Might Want to Think About Before You Go

Before you run out and book, there’s, in fact, a few very important things to consider. First. Okay, you’re going to be underground, it could be damp and kind of cold, more or less, dress accordingly. And stuff. Second. A little. Vaults can feel cramped. Arguably. You should consider that if you are claustrophobic. Pretty much. Third. And so on. Remember what I was saying about the smells? Okay, If you have strong sensitivities, or you’re very pregnant, well then you may want to check with the tour company first, right?

Who’s This Tour Good For, Then?

So who would totally get into this kind of haunted vault experience? Very. First, those who love ghost stories and want to go further than your everyday walking tour. Pretty. People, as well, that are really interested in historical quirks and who like feeling like they have actually stepped back in time. Just like the actors in some kind of spooky play. Alright, those that appreciate something a little more immersive and aren’t, I’d say, easily startled, would get a huge kick out of this.

Wrapping It Up, Like. Worth It?

The Edinburgh Multi-Sensory Adults Haunted Vaults Night Tour really delivers if you go with an open mind, or very slightly tipsy, as I may have been. And stuff. What makes it unique? What makes it interesting, basically, is that they amplify all that classic storytelling by tickling your senses. First. Very deliberately, of course. However, do be prepared, sometimes, to be legitimately spooked. By the way. If you’re, very, into that kind of thing, and you think getting spooked sounds just about right, then you will get every penny’s worth.
