4-Day US Tour from NYC: My Personal Review & Guide

Okay, so picture this: ditching the everyday chaos of the Big Apple for a quick sprint through some of America’s big points. That is what I did. I decided, pretty much on a whim, to take a four-day tour from New York City, hitting up Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and also Amish Country. Frankly, it sounded crazy jam-packed. But, at the end of the day, it turned out to be quite the adventure. Now, I’m just looking to give you the full story, sharing all the good stuff, plus, of course, those little bits that could have been better. The target audience is somebody wanting to get a flavor for these destinations without committing to weeks on the road.

Day 1: Philadelphia – History Comes Alive, Sort Of

Independence Hall Philadelphia

Right, day one was all Philadelphia, the city that’s almost overflowing with history. That said, I was excited, too it’s almost like a kid in a candy store. Our first point of interest was Independence Hall, and let me tell you, that’s where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were both debated and signed. Very awesome, that is, standing in the same spot where some huge moments in American history went down.

We also checked out the Liberty Bell, and that’s basically an American icon, all cracked, and really fascinating, so you see up close. Is that something? Absolutely, it’s also something. Now, I will say that the crowds were kind of a bit much. Attempting to get a good pic was, as a matter of fact, an Olympic sport. Still, those historical goosebumps were worth it.

Lunch was in Reading Terminal Market, and it’s rather a food lover’s paradise. As a matter of fact, I grabbed a Philly cheesesteak (obviously!). Yet, while there were options to choose from, I had to stick with tradition, so too it’s almost like a rule, isn’t it? It was, to be honest, a bit greasy but, really, very good. Definitely fuelled me up for more sightseeing. That’s something that definitely came in handy!

That is when things took a less conventional turn. See, we walked through some local neighborhoods, and in short, got a feel for Philly that you won’t get from the usual tourist spots. Very eye-opening and a good way to burn some of the cheesesteak calories!

Day 2: Washington, D.C. – Monuments and Might, You Know?

Washington Monument Washington DC

Day two, and, basically, it was onto Washington, D.C., and this is what you think it would be! I was prepared for the grandeur and that officialdom. I got the National Mall, too, and it’s this huge green space lined with monuments and museums. Visiting the Lincoln Memorial, as a matter of fact, that was pretty intense. Seeing that huge statue of Lincoln and reading his words… pretty impactful.

Next, we hit the World War II Memorial. By the way, so many names of places like these in this part of the world are pretty somber, but meaningful. It’s a stark place that serves almost as a testament to this country’s historical journey. That might be something people would connect with even more these days. It reminded me how many have sacrificed.

The White House and the Capitol Building were also on the list, and they are just places you have to see, actually. I mean, as I was saying, there’s all that history! You can’t tour the inside of the White House easily but, arguably, getting that iconic photo from outside the gates, as a matter of fact, it’s something you just do, doesn’t it?

Yet, the museums, we spent only a little time, as there wasn’t nearly enough of it to actually soak it all in. The National Air and Space Museum in short it could keep you occupied for days, just by itself. That’s why this trip didn’t allow time to even scratch the surface. A shame, actually.

A point to keep in mind. D.C. involves a whole ton of walking, too, so basically wear comfy shoes! My feet were screaming by the end of the day. Maybe not as loud as those airplanes in the museum. Very something though!

Day 3: Amish Country – A Step Back in Time

Amish farm Lancaster Pennsylvania

So, day three took us to a world that’s rather different from anything else we’d seen: Amish Country in Pennsylvania. I was actually pretty curious about this, I will admit. This area, too it’s almost like a time capsule, with horse-drawn buggies and people living a simple life, away from the craziness of modern tech and society.

We toured a farmhouse and it’s actually, a farm, and got a look at how the Amish live, basically. Their commitment to community and their faith, clearly, that was something else. I had to remind myself, or, to be honest, did wonder if people live like that in 2024.

I did try some homemade root beer, and it tasted great. And some shoo-fly pie, which was sweet. You could feel you are really stepping outside our normal way of living, clearly. If I were going back, too it’s almost I’d try and visit a working farm and even talk to one of the locals!

That’s when we saw some beautiful countryside. That drive from D.C. to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in other words where Amish Country is, so, anyway it was really relaxing. Rolling hills, green fields… it’s gorgeous, in fact.

Day 4: Back to NYC – Reflecting on the Whirlwind

New York City traffic

Day four. That is the day for getting back to NYC, really. Basically, there were long bus ride and some time to process all the stuff we’d crammed in, you know? Coming back to the hustle and bustle of the city it’s something real, too. Seeing the yellow cabs and all the crowds it’s very jarring after the quiet of Amish Country.

I was, and frankly, a bit tired. That trip wasn’t exactly a relaxing vacation, more like a sprint. Yet, I had to remember: I’d seen a whole heap, hadn’t I?

From historic spots, apparently, to iconic monuments, basically all that learning in just four days. Basically, the way that I’d organized it allowed me to sample each location, and that left me wanting to plan longer trips back to one or more destinations, like Philadelphia. Basically, a winner!

There are so many other four-day tour experiences from NYC, so, anyway they are similar to mine. One I will need to remember, actually.

A great thing too is, it’s almost that all these trips were super affordable. Some tour companies did give great prices, too!
